I am so curious what people thoughts on these are and, by extension, their thoughts on Alex Ross' vision of Bats and Supes!

Is anyone else amazed by his excellence and yet unintimidated by his Batman?

Ross is iconic to me for his realistic art style. He achieves this by using real people as references, as well as being a phenomenal artist. This level of realism and commitment to his style is just what sets him apart from other artists. Others may achieve a more scary, manacing batman but at the expense of what Ross does so well. Ross doesn't try to exaggerate or be a standard comic artist and that is what sets him apart for me, but it will always come down to personal preference
