Howdy fellow freaks,
When the Hot Toys ESB Deluxe figure came out with the alternate parts I first learned about the variations and stages of the development of the costume. Through the research I kind of became enthralled with the craftsmanship, story behind the development, and all the lore around it.
I had some experience with building mpc model kits when I was much younger, and some kitbashing experience, but through many ruined parts and many ESB sets bought, I learned a lot - particularly air brush, color mixing, chipping methods, and finishes.
I'm really close to finishing the singular PP2 I planned five years and three kids ago. All the extra parts allowed me to finish a couple other Fetts in the meantime that I'm pleased with.
First is the "eyes" PP1 that had more than enough differences from the "ears" version to justify an additional PP1 to the "ears" that I had first completed. There are three reference photos altogether, so I took some liberties or filled in details with "ears" references.
Rough recipe:
Flamethrower and poncho buckle: rafalworks (via shapeways).
Eyes design: Piero Bockos
Body: Hot Toys ESB Fett (unmodified).
Flight Suit: Hot Toys, tailored through arms, dyed, sleeves painted, weathered (chalk pastels, paint washes).
Belt: Hot Toys, pouches divided up and repositioned.
Girth belt: Hot Toys, painted, center stitch removed.
Pouches: Hot Toys, painted top portions, filled to match references, weathered (chalk pastels)
Armor: Hot Toys, stripped and repainted with Archive-X and Tamiya acrylics. Hairspray chip method to match references w/ combination airbrush, paint wash and chalk pastel weathering. Repositioned chest armor and shortened vest. Added clasp. Added what I think were backpack straps between yoke and chest plate armor. Added damage to left knee pad.
Jetpack: Hot Toys, mounted poncho/cape (added buckle slip to poncho).
Left gauntlet: Marmit w/ Hot Toys rocket, Rafalworks flamethrower, repainted w/ Archive-X, chip and airbrush weathered.
Right gauntlet: Sideshow, repainted w/ Vallejo and Tamiya acrylics, chip and airbrush weathered.
Helmet: Hot Toys, removed “ears” and kill stripes, added eye decals, repainted key holes, pastel weathering. Carved out a bit behind neck socket to allow a better range of motion.
Gloves: sideshow, sculpted patches, repainted.
Boots: Hot Toys, repainted.
Spats: dyed.
Phew! If you made it this far, thanks!
