I recently discovered this new version of The Count of Monte Cristo, it's a French version. And since I enjoyed the recent French version of The Three Musketeers so much, I decided to give this one a shot.

It's much different than the 2002 US version with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce, so if you liked that version or didn't, this one is worth a watch. It does almost the exact opposite things. In 2002, Jacopo was a significant side character, in the 2024 version, he's merely a background character. In 2024, Andrea Cavalcanti and Haydee are prominent characters, who are absent from the 2002 version. So, the movies almost act like A and B storylines, while the A story plays out in the US version, the B story presented in the French version shows the things that are happening concurrently, almost like the earlier Resident Evil games.

The 2002 is more of a swashbuckler film, whereas this 2024 is almost more of a a heist film, in that the Count has a plan and you're interested in seeing how it all plays out. Maybe not the right analogy, but that is just to say don't expect a lot of sword play in this 2024 version.

I really enjoyed it. With so much content in the book, it's only natural that changes be made, but this one is so different from the US version, it's worth a watch.

One other thing I forgot to mention, since this is a French film and presumably shot in France (the credits were in French, so I couldn't read them :lol ) but it was fun seeing location shots that weren't Vancouver or Georgia dressed up as Anytown, USA.

There were some shots of the French countryside that were pretty cool. It was just fun seeing new locales.
