A blow dryer will work too.

Using the heat is the first step. After you heat it up, hold it in the position you want and run it under cold water. The cold water makes it stay in the desired position.

Unfortunately you will probably still have to remove the suit. At least to see what is really going on. You said there was tension still. That could be that the ball joint is stuck in the legs and could be breaking from the straight part on the joint. Once it breaks, it will just hand there...

I guess that would work. Truthfully I have never tried it, only because I use my figures for animating and I need the joints to always be tight. I know for sure the glue technique works and I only needed to do it once. For posing on a shelf, blu tac might be enough, but not for animating IMO.
