This is a new Netflix series that premiered on Friday, based on the novel of the same name.

From the Youtube description page:

Why would a dead girl lie? 13 Reasons Why is now streaming only on Netflix.

Based on the best-selling books by Jay Asher, the Netflix Original Series 13 Reasons Why follows Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? 13 Reasons Why comes from executive producers Tom McCarthy, Brian Yorkey, Selena Gomez, Joy Gorman and Kristel Laiblin.

I had never heard of the book before, but the series caught my eye this weekend. And after the first episode, I was committed to seeing it the end. It's a very dark series (and not one recommended for children), and while this particular story is fiction, it's based on a real issues that affect not only youth, but even adults. For some of you, this series may 'hit close to home' because it did for me. My best friend committed suicide almost 5 years ago. Things changed forever after that day. In some ways, I could relate to the feelings these characters were experiencing. Watching this was almost therapeutic in some ways because I could relate. I normally don't get very personal here and I don't intend to anymore than I have already, but watching this, compelled me to post about this show. I really admire what the show has done for bringing these issues to light. It's not for the feint of heart, but it really highlights the realization of just how much your words and actions can have on people. And for some, it changes their life forever.

If you've seen the show or read the book, I encourage you to post your thoughts.

Sorry about your friend :(. My brother in law commited suicide 2 years ago and its truly a difficult thing to experience.

I'm now on episode 12 of 13 and at first I thought the characters were a bit melodramatic but as its gone on, I've become gripped. The performances here are really quite superb and I'm finding it incredibly sad but I need to see it through to the end. Expecting some more twists and turns before the end.

On ep 7 I think. Been a decent watch. There are faults in every character, even the one that slit herself.

Finished this last night. I was absolutely devastated after it ended. Part of me wanted there to be a twist where she didn't kill herself. It wouldn't have worked but I grew so attached to the character. It all felt so real.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm sorry to hear of your loss as well. It's never something you can be prepared for. And while I think time heals all wounds, some take longer than others, and even then, scars remain. One day, they're here, and the next, they're not. I think it's that shock and abrupt feeling of losing them without ever saying good-bye. I don't think a day goes by that I don't think of him. He was basically my brother, my family.

Just as you said, I was hoping for a twist too, but it never came. I agree though that I don't think it would have worked unfortunately.

The whole series was just something amazing. I really felt for the characters. The story and the way it was told was so well done.

I definitely want to revisit this in the future, but it's not something I'm willing to do anytime soon. That last episode was devastating, just as you said. I'm not afraid to admit it: I was crying for Hannah. The final scene detailing her death was beyond words. I think what moved me so much about this show is its portrayal of issues like depression, suicide, social pressures, etc. and it moved me because it's so accurate. These things happen to people. And this is exactly how some people deal with those pressures.

Just finished this, a bit of a roller coaster

But like some of you said, glad it brings these things to light, as a parent it was hard to watch at point

Would have liked some resolution with the law suit/ school. But I guess that was left to be assumed

Family for sure won the lawsuit. While all the tapes built up the reason why, the councilor sealed it. He was the one that could have and should have made a difference. But he told her to deal with it and move on. And then when Clay's mom was probing questions for the schools firm, the councilor never mentioned that last meeting, just one about career.

As for the show, Clay was an awesome character. Well written and acted. His tape, then ending, made even me well up.

I was just browsing Netflix and caught this without even hearing about it. It was a great watch. Interested to see what season 2 brings.

I'm pretty sure the next season will have to deal with just the lawsuit, and I can foresee a school shooting, that will probably bring up for a 3rd season. By this point, they will probably be seniors. Show had some emotional moments for me, I did enjoy it, but I felt it was a weak push for suicide; although some things were actually brutally honest.
