I love the large 18" (or quarter scale figures) especially those that don't cost an arm and a leg. Sure, I have my fair share of Sideshow's Premium Format figures, but the $50 or so figures that we've gotten from Mezco, NECA, Sota and others hold a special place in my heart.

Mezco's latest 18" Hellboy is the subject of my review tonight. He has a very different coat, three different head sculpts, a new Right Hand of Doom sculpt, and comes with Big Baby as well, making him quite a bit different than the original Hellboy movie version in this scale. I had a couple very specific issues that pulled my score down slightly, but there's no doubt that this is a mighty cool figure.

Pretty nice looking figure... would love to see Mezco go full into the 1/6 market. I think they have great sculptors and could really make some damn cool figures.

I also got my 18" Hellboy 2 figure today, and like Michael I got the "gritting teeth" variant, which wasn't really the one I wanted. I think it's kind of lame to ship random variants for a $60 figure.

I have mixed feelings about this figure. It's nicer than I expected in some ways, and kind of crappy in others. I pretty much agree with everything Michael said in his review. You have to use boiling water to soften up his hand or there's no way you're going to get him to hold his gun (although once you've done it, you can put it in and take it out pretty easily). The left arm on mine keeps coming out of the socket and in general the figure feels kind of rickety. But in a way it was a good thing, because having the arm come out forced me to partially remove his black muscle shirt, and I discovered that he looked a lot better without it. I'm kind of surprised that Mezco did all the painting and detailing for his torso, considering it is covered by a shirt that you can't really remove without cutting it off. In the end, that's what I did with mine. It just looks better without it. He looks good without the trenchcoat as well, actually, although it makes the articulation more obvious. I just wish they had supplied an alternate "fisted" Right Hand of Doom, since it looks a little odd to have it open all the time.

Damn.. nice! It does look better without the shirt icruise. Without the jacket is kinda crappy though since the chest/torso joint is ghastly. Nice Mod.

You should be able to pop off the right hand of doom if you heat it up at the arm joint...I haven't tried it, so I make no guarantees, but you could be able to remove it, then you can take off the coat and shirt.

The coat comes off just fine if you just unbuckle it. It's the shirt that is the issue, but I figured I wouldn't want to display it with the shirt anyway so i just cut it off.

I don't know, although the material seems awfully stretchy. Again, I'm assuming you're going to take the right hand off. While unbuckling the jacket will work, it's also a pain in the ass to get unbuckled and buckled again with big fingers. I'd boil and pop that arm instead, making both the coat AND shirt easy to remove.

But I haven't tried it yet, so I make no guarantees :D

That's why I cut it off -- I didn't particularly want the shirt and didn't want to risk hurting the figure itself. However, after looking at the figure more closely, I think you can actually just pop his arms off at the shoulder and remove the shirt that way.

Just got mine today!! Paid like 30.00 after some reward points..:D ...I didn't even realize there was three versions until I read crawfords review. I, unfortunately, also got the open mouth version. It is very cool and nicely done, however I was expecting the cigar version since that is the one pictured on sideshows site. Maybe they should have said that they would be shipping randome variants...oh well...I'm sure that version will sell for a fortune on ebay later..

I got the open mouth version too,in my storage for 2 years now. LOL !!!
