I remeber watching these two movies when I was about 6 or 7 and it remains one of my top movies of all time.. but after rewatching it, I finnally understand what the movie meant and the message it was sending I absolutely love this movie and decided to go full time in making a

joker/monkey king figure..

I've seen the tao version and quite fankly I'm not a fan of the goofy/cartoon headsculpts..

I decided first I'm going to buy the DiD cj7 stephen as a base and sculpt on the details.. what I'm trying to decided now is should I use real hair or sculpt hair on it myself?

this is how the main character looks, played by stephen chow.

does anyone have higher res pictures of the monkey king?

has anyone even seen this movie?

Very cool movie and a great idea! The Tao Headsculpt is definitely not the right look, although the other monkey sculpt is cool looking... not to mention the outfit is completely different.

I think the cj7 sculpt might be a bit too old, but I guess its as good a start as any.

I would use real (ish) hair. With a character like that sculpted hair would really restrict your poseability and would probably lead to issues. I bought some faux fur from a hobby store when I made my Monkian figure and it worked out really well... just a bit of a mess.

Can't wait to see your progress :rock

I dunno, I'm going to attemp to sculpt stephen chow, bald and add fuax hair, but if it's a last resort I would talk to chris howes for a commision but I doubt anyone would join in.. maybe just you lol.

The outfit would be a tricky one... although I think I saw a similar custom outfit once over on OSW, for a Monkey samurai no less.

I own the Tao Monkey King figure(King Hanuman) and while I agree the heads are not the best, what about the outfit? It looks pretty accurate, or even one of the other figures in the line. I can't wait to see the finished figure, and thank you for reminding us of one of the best Journey to the West films in the past twenty years.

I think the outfitt is a bit off, I would love to own the tao figure, but it cost way too much for me, and I think the tao figure is a generalization of the character which is awesome in its own right. :rock

The Tao figure has more of a woven look to it than the metallic armor of how Hanuman looked in the film. I think the only nod to A Chinese Odyssey from the Tao figure is the head that kind of looks like Chow and has the same headpiece.

I would love to see how you accomplish this figure. It's monkey-related and I love it already.

I have a 10" figure that I was going to convert (someday) to a Qin dynasty warrior, but his body is now going to be made into Lucius for my beloved Ape City. If somebody could post photos of the armor you are planning on making for the figure it would be so awesome. I love seeing photographs and thinking about how I would recreate it. Not that I necessarily would. I just like to keep the hamsters in my head moving in their exercise wheels.

I have not seen the movie, but I read the translated book. It was great.

I found this online:

wow thanks jessica! but if I remeber correctly thats MK from another series I'm not too familiar with.. the stephen chow design has always been my favorite. I wish I could find more pictures of it. :/

Awesome outfit! I have ideas churning in my head already. That would be a wonderful outfit to make. Good luck and show some WIP shots!!!

this movie was actually split into 2 parts...

and the bad part about it all was that we barely got to see Stephen Chow in Monkey King... Once at the beginning and once at the end. Kinda like in the Forbidden Kingdom..

yeah it was pandora's box and cinderella.. I actually liked that the story was more focused on joker. we all know waht goes down afterwards in Journey to the west... dam chinese soap operas...
