hey guys im new to collecting statues, i have a couple random thoughts/questions: When i initially purchased my first 3 statues (2 batman artfx and the killing joke joker statue) I was unaware of sideshow, exclusives, or anything like that. I have since also purchased the lion o exclusive premium format statue, the joker pf ex, and pre ordered sheperd and drake pf ex's. My question is from what ive seen this very addictive habit needs some structure, Ive tried, well, am, implementing is to only get the 1/4 statues. but how does that work if I have some that are smaller or bigger? and what is looked at as "higher up" on the food chain or quality list (if there is a difference), between figures and statues? and what is the best way to go about deciding if an exclusive is worth getting over a reg edition, etc? whats another good website/company besides sideshow that sells great statues? Ive seen and purchased kotobukiya (I KNOW i misspelled that) or bowen..etc? Thanks, apologies for the ramble which Ik just happened and the plethora of grammatical errors...thanks again and HELLO!

Collect what you like. I would recommend displaying statues of like scale together just cause it looks better. If you like 1/4 scale stick with that, there are many places to get 1/4 scale other than SSC. As far as exclusives...same thing if you like what the exclusive has get it, they start at the same price so most of the time an exclusive is a regular with an extra head or hand or print. Sometimes it is a completely different paint job, I would say these are the more sought after Exl. Collect what you love don't collect for future monetary compensation. ex. my favorite statue to this day is my European Release Thing (not exactly a holy grail).

:exactly::goodpost:

Also as far as structure/collecting what you like goes I only collect from a few lines and display those lines together. Such DC Comics Premium Formats or Horror Collectibles. This makes for a good display and also keeps in line generally when it comes to buying so i don't go all crazy.:panic:

guys thanks so much for the info much appreciated..idk why but for some reason in my head im really for lack of a better word obsessed with the exclusive vs the reg..i think that I would think that the non-exclusive < the exclusive. Can you clear that up or how i should approach that theory? I like the idea of collecting what u think is best and I love the example by using the Thing...thanks again!

Hello, A2themonster! Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay.

hey guys im new to collecting statues, i have a couple random thoughts/questions:

Sure! Never apologize for having questions, just ask, and anyone will gladly answer them to the best of their knowledge. It's always nice helping a fellow collector.

When i initially purchased my first 3 statues (2 batman artfx and the killing joke joker statue) I was unaware of sideshow, exclusives, or anything like that. I have since also purchased the lion o exclusive premium format statue, the joker pf ex, and pre ordered sheperd and drake pf ex's.

By telling all this, I can see you're a fan of Batman, ThunderCats, and Videogames. It's important having that in mind.

My question is from what ive seen this very addictive habit needs some structure, Ive tried, well, am, implementing is to only get the 1/4 statues. but how does that work if I have some that are smaller or bigger?

It depends. If the statues of different sizes are all of the same character, you can have a section of your collection dedicated to that character, and it will make perfect sense.

and what is looked at as "higher up" on the food chain or quality list (if there is a difference), between figures and statues

"Life-size" is 1:1, nearly nobody collects that scale;

"Legendary Scale" is 1:2, it's the approximate 50% of the life-size, but it's still HUGE. These are very expensive, and take a lot of space. Few people gets into it;

"Premium Format", around 1:4 and sometimes 1:5. It's a scale in expansion, more people get into it everyday. They're expensive, but with some effort, perfectly possible;

Then there's the 1:6 and smaller... very affordable, there are some very nice things in smaller sizes, but less detailed than in the other I mentioned earlier.

and what is the best way to go about deciding if an exclusive is worth getting over a reg edition, etc?

Tastes, more than anything else, is the deciding factor. Then it's all up to personal critteria.
Many times, the exclusive version with have a differences in color, or will come with a detail or accesory that won't come with the regular edition. Example: there's an upcoming statue of Conan fighting against a giant beast, in which the regular version the beast is painted white; while in the exclusive version, the beast is black.
Most of the times, the exclusive version is produced in smaller numbers, so it's more difficult to get. If you really like the exclusive better than the regular, and consider that the difference in price is justified, then it's up to you going for it or not.
LIke I said, it's all up to tastes, and personal critteria. :lecture

whats another good website/company besides sideshow that sells great statues?

There's lots of them, and each day new ones seem to appear. This is a hobby in constant expansion. More people gets into it each day.
Sideshow Colletibles, Gentle Giant, DC Collectibles, ARH Studios, Attakus Bowen Designs, Pop Culture Shock, and others in the USA scene. In the japanese market there's companies like Kotobukiya, Yamato, Good Smile Company, Griffon Entertainment, and many more. The japanese market is HUGE!

Ive seen and purchased kotobukiya (I KNOW i misspelled that)

Actually, your spelling was correct! :lol

or bowen..etc?

Right. And there's many others.

Thanks, apologies for the ramble which Ik just happened and the plethora of grammatical errors...thanks again and HELLO!

No problem! Welcome to the hobby, and have a great time collecting! :dance

guys thanks so much for your responses! and kryptonian thanks for so much detail! I also had a question in regards to the smaller 1/6 vs 1/4...I understand there is an obvious size difference between the two, but is there also a level of detail difference (assuming that the 1/4 would be more detailed?) I even called SS to ask for clarification and I got (hesitantly, sorta un-sure sounding) that yes there is the obvious again size difference, but that the level of detail is the same, no more no less, specifically when comparing 1/4 to 1/6...what do you guys think and any extra info on that would be awesome...I actually got my lion-o exclusive PF yesterday and personally LOVE the size of it and the look, and imo it blows away the smaller 1/6 ones in terms of obviously presence but also in turn detail....thanks in advance for helping me clear this up!

You're welcome!

Well, the thing is like this: proportionally, you can say that, for their respective sizes, they tend to be as detailed as they can, so that's how they'd be just as detailed despite the difference in size.

But consider this: a bigger statue gives more room to the sculptor to go further and include even more intricate details than in a smaller size.

So, the 1:4 has the potential to be more detailed than the 1:6, but at the end of the day, it all depends on the skills of the sculptor to create something as detailed as possible.

To give you an example: check out the Gentle Giant "Honey Trap" statues thread, to see how detailed a 1:4 statue can be.

Hope this helps. :wink1:

The newsletter is a good source of information for upcoming POs, usually they'll tell you a week in advance, also since you're having issues with the email newsletters check into your account and see if you can view through the website. If that still doesn't work someone on the boards will sometimes post a link to the Newsletter.

Normally POs go up on Thursdays except during events like SDCC and Spooktacular. So checking the website every Thursday about 2pmPST will also give you a nice jump on the POs.

Also, when you're waiting on a PO this board is a wealth of information(although at times it can be a bit chaotic as well) but when item goes up for PO the thread created will usually go crazy.

All of these are a good way to keep track of what's coming and when to buy it.

thanks for the info-how can I go on the website and view it? and also what are the odds of converting a waitlist item? I am on one for the commander shepard ex and dont really know too much about that!- Thanks again!

For the news letter when you log into your account on the far right hand side is a bar, click the down arrow next to "Your Newsletter Account". This will cycle for a minute while it brings up the newsletters. Once you see dates, click on the latest one. Usually the new one is posted on Thursdays at about 2pm PST.

As fro the waitlist that's a little more tricky. It all depends on how many people are ahead of you on the list and how many Cancellations, Credit Card declines and Returns they get. Usually once you're on the waitlist you'll stay on it until Sideshow has no more stock left and they know all their returns and cancellations are in. Then they'll cancel the waitlist them selves. The longer the item has been on the waitlist before you got on, the less likely you have of converting. Though, in rare cases, I've heard of people getting a waitlist conversion months after an item has sold out.

guys next question..where can i get info/ideas/or a website to purchase display options for my new statues? thanks again for the welcoming hand btw!

also what is the difference between a polystone statue vs a premium format figure..specifically im asking bcz they are both listed as 1/4 scale...is it just the difference of materials used to create it> and if so what r those differences? im looking @ the rinzler statue vs say a PF statue...thanks
