I'm guessing they put more work into this than the prop guys did for the real prop.

that would be a good guess. the props just had the screen and some blinking lights. it didn't track any motion and the sound effects were added in post. this goddamn thing WORKS. now we just need someone to make some aliens to track.

i think he's trying to avoid as many copyright issues as possible.
it isn't exactly official licensed merchandise and FOX likes to sue.

he wrote it himself in C. i don't think there's a GPL license for it or anything. if he feels like releasing it, he will.
