I searched and found nothing on this. Does anyone here have one or any of the other digital book readers?? My brother wants a new Kindle for Xmas and I wanted to hear some thoughts/reviews on it. I've read the product reviews and what not so I know the gist of what to expect, but hopefully someone here can chime in.

I'm interested in this as well. I've been wanting an e-reader for a while, but I've been holding out because of price and missing features. E-ink is amazing to see in person and I can't wait to finally own a reader. I know a lot of people will chime in and say "I like to touch things" (giggedy), but I'm seriously out of room for books, so being able to store them in one place is extremely attractive.

I'm leaning more towards a Nook rather than a Kindle, but I'm waiting for some hands-on reviews before I make a purchase.

Regarding the Kindle, I do remember this article posted to gizmodo a while back: https://gizmodo.com/5159989/first-kindle-2-destroyed-showing-extended-warranty-may-be-worth-it

So you may want to look into an extended warranty...

I guess reading is hard. :lol

Nook reviews are coming out now and it sounds like the interface is a bit sluggish and the battery life suffers a bit because of the lcd screen.

Overall, everyone seems very mixed on it.

After reading the reviews, I think I'm going to get a nook over a Kindle. The file format it uses is non-proprietary (but the DRM is), the LCD screen provides superior navigation imo, the lending feature is nice (if a bit stingy) and the promise of Android is exciting. B&N say the sluggishness will be addressed with a software update.

i was going to get a kindle for xmas but i feel like it is a little bit overpriced at the moment. Once the competition picks up i think amazon will drop the price. I told my lady to wait and we will watch to see if the price drops.

I have Kindle for iPhone, it's awesome. Just an idea if you're not sure about purchasing the Kindle tablet. If you wanted to give it as a gift to someone that has an iPhone, you can just get them an Amazon gift card and they can pick the books they want.

Barnes & Noble Nook review (just released. biggest competitor to Kindle at the moment): https://gizmodo.com/5420216/barnes--noble-nook-review-pretty-damn-good

My sister has a Kindle. I used it for a weekend when I visited for Thanksgiving. It's definitely easier on the eyes compared to reading text on an LCD screen. Honestly, I'm a traditionalist. I'll do fine with good ol' hard/paperbacks when I'm not using my pc, but I can see the draw of these portable readers. They're just still a bit too expensive for my budget.

I'm thinking of getting one in the future, and I'm considering the Barnes & Noble Nook over the Kindle because it's a bit more advanced (2 screens, one of them a touchscreen).

I've seen the Kindle app for Iphone, but I don't really understand its purpose. The whole crux of Kindle usefulness is that its E-Ink screen is supposed to replicate the look of text on traditional paper. Wouldn't all of that be lost if you're using Kindle on an LCD screen?

May be just me, but when I read a book, I actually want to hold the book.....call me old fashioned

This is true, but as already stated shelf space becomes an issue. We went with the Kindle for my brother....who is stationed in Korea and spends a lot of time where he won't be able to lug around a bunch of books so this is more of a convenience for him. He's gonna subscribe to the local newspaper here, and just keep on reading while on duty.

~~~I'm interested in the Nook as well, but will wait for further review once its released next month.
The purpose is a lot more people have iPhones and Amazon likes money, that's about it!
I don't have a Kindle myself, but a bunch of my friends do. It's handy. Being able to bring a bunch of books with you on a trip, reading newspapers, whatever.
They had a deal with Gen 2 refubs at uh, $180 or so a few weeks back. It was pretty decent.
I was able to play with a nook at a local B&N last night. It's a nice little reader. My only gripe is that the refresh rate after "turning" a page seems to be a bit laggy, but that's an issue on all E-readers from what I understand.
I wish I could play with a Kindle to be able to compare. I think unless Amazon can get demo units to stores, they're going to lose a lot of sales to the nook.
A friend of mine swears by his Sony something or other, I'll have to check that out soon.
I read books on my Iphone - don't see a reason to get another device.
They really need to develop a device that read comic books. THAT I would buy in a second.
Though I feel the same way, IF these readers, in the long run, turn out to be a cheaper way to go, then I can see getting them. I've noticed the price of books is going up and if this can save an avid reader some money then it's all good.
Could save a few trees as well. :D
I've had my Kindle for two days now (early X-mas gift) and I love it. If you are a reader you will dig it from the start. My condo is small and I hate clutter, so I found myself giving away books after I read them. This holds 1500 books at a time.
I love books, and these creep me out a little bit. If this is the first step in printed text becoming obsolete, I will have to come back to 2009 and take it out on someone.
They still seem cool. It's awesome that you can carry a library around with you.
:nono
We need to get rid of the trees to make room for more skyscrapers.
I love books, but they can overwhelm. If everything were released on Kindle, I'd get it and get rid of all the books. I don't see anything wrong with the old ink on paper format going away - save space, time, money, the environment - it's all win, baby.
I played with the Nook yesterday and wasn't very impressed with it. It was very sluggish with every operation I was trying to do with it and just didn't want to work as fast as I do.
I played with the Kindle before wrapping it up for my brother and I liked it even though I could only play with the main menu. I might just wait a while before pulling the trigger on either one of them.
Necropost, well, not really.
So I got a Kindle today and I heard they have apps for this and everything. Anyone else have an actual Kindle and not just the Iphone app?
My wife has one. I don't think she's loaded any apps on it though. I'm a nook guy, myself.
