I wonder if in 60 years from now, the price of statues is going to dramatically increase like with baseball cards?
By the way, I am not in this hobby for value; it's nice but the main thing is beauty and the feeling you are getting a "quality" piece of art.
Baseball cards from the 50's, about as far back as they go before the prices get astronomical, are worth, usually at least $100 be card for commons. I know my father has a Sandy Kaufax rookie from 1956? and it's worth close to $1,500. An incredible increase in price. Bought new back in the 50's you could probably get for today's equivalent of a 50 cents.
I just used baseball cards because there are similarities between statues and cards.
What makes a collectible valuable?
Scarcity
Demand
Intrinsic value (ie some metals for their use in industrial applications, this is part of demand though)
Will demand go up?
For comic books they will continue to make more and more movies of each character over time so this will increase interest.
Are comic books getting more popular? Will they? idk
Are action figures and/or statues getting more popular? idk Seems as though interest in comic books and action figure has decreased in kids because of other forms of entertainment. Perhaps video game statues will become very valuable once these children grow up and reach normal statue collecting age (20-40)? I'd guess.
Statues have intrinsic value in that they are beautiful pieces of art. Sculptures have been a form of art in every culture for thousands and thousands of years.
Scarcity is relative to demand as sideshow can set ES's. As of right now scarcity hasnt changed, I don't believe.
Just some thoughts I'd throw out there. Just curious, when I'm 85, if my Punisher Comiquette will be worth $50,000. Probably break a piece off by then.
EDIT - Randy Bowen's Batman on a Gargoyle statue from the early 90's has an edition size of 5,555 and sells for around $700 today. When it was released I remembered it selling for $75 in NYC. What's that $110 or something today. Huge increase in value over time. Maybe it's telling. Compared to SideShow Batman PF that statue doesn't stand up in beauty and detail independent of scale. So an inferior product that isn't too rare has greatly increased in price because demand did go up I'm guessing with SideShow joining the market
If interest in video game statues increases new collectors will almost certainly start collecting other lines increasing the demand for statues. Buy some Arthas statues, I have a feeling that is going to go up A LOT. Maybe when I acquire some more capital I will. But then I'd also have to wait a few years, eh, don't know if it's worth effort.
