I'm surprised there wasn't an old thread for this, considering how popular Battletech was in the 90s :lol. That said, is there anyone here who has collected the old Battletech cards, or played the MechWarrior video games from Activision/Microsoft?

Steam recently released MWO, and I got into it a few days ago. It's been a blast! I don't really like many of the redesigned mechs - I preferred the retro designs from the 80s, instead). But, the multiplayer is very nostalgic. It reminds me a bit of the team-based matches from MW 3 - although, I have no idea how I even managed that with a 56kbps connection.

Anyways, this is meant to be an all-encompassing thread for Battletech. Post your collections, discuss the games, etc. I have three, 9 inch die-cast figures from WizKids that I'll post those within the week.

Random pics for the opening post...

I'm taking the second post! Battletech is my thing! Used to love this game. Originally bought the Xbox for Mech Assault.

And coz this is video game thread, there was this I gotta look into:
Battletech Kickstarter

I got excited and went to the kick starter and saw it was turn based. Not my thing. Is mwo turn based? Im playing hawken and thats the type of mech game i like. Is mwo like that? Thanks.

Hey, those are Macross figs!

Anyways, thanks for posting the link, can't wait to see how that game develops. I guess the story takes place before the Clan invasions? I always wanted to play one of those. I think I'll have to pledge $200 for that custom jacket.

I've always wondered if the Metal Gears would stand a chance against an Omnimech :monkey1.

Hawken's still around? :lol Besides, why are you still playing it? I thought the devs gave up on it.

I guess MWO is... somewhat similar to Hawken. The major difference is, Hawken is more of a generic FPS/shooter, whereas MWO is a full-fledged a simulation game. If you have a flight-stick with driving pedals, MWO is very enjoyable (although it plays great with mouse, and keyboard, too).

You should try it out, MWO's free to play.

I got on hawken like 2 or 3 weeks ago and plenty of people were playing it. I think you can still buy credits if you were so inclined. Im a fan of robot beat em ups where i can fight in fps, there isnt enough of them. Looking for something new.

Download MGO and try it out then! :lol I've got no one to play with...

You initially start off with a selection of Trial mechs (which you can't customize), but after your tenth match or so, you'll have enough in-game funds to buy your first Battlemech. Even the trial mechs are pretty decent, though.

But, I should mention, that MWO has a fairly steep learning curve if this is your first MechWarrior game. Unlike Hawken, you won't be able to get in and start playing immediately. It's a mech simulator, so you'll have to practice piloting controls, learn how to manage heat levels from your reactor, and customize a weapon combination (as well as find a mech class) that best suits your play-style.

It takes a lot of trial and error, but I've been though this before with all of the MW games. I grew up on these games, so I'll be able to help you out.

I played MechWarrior 2 as a kid. It was one of the first PC games I ever played as it came with our IBM back in the day. I loved it. I wanted to get into the Battletech novels last year but found that most are out of print and sell for too much money for me to care :lol If I ever get a joystick for my non-gaming PC, I would install MechWarrior 2 and X-Wing Alliance.

MW2 was the first PC game I ever played, I remember I had my parents buy me the Battle Pack for my Grade 5 graduation present :lol.

As for the novels, they don't follow a single continuity. Some deal with the Clans, others are primarily focused on the warring Houses of the Inner Sphere, and then there are one-shot entries (most notably, the "MechWarrior titled novels).

But, if you want to get into the novels, I highly recommend Exodus Road - it's a fantastic starting point. To this day, it's still one of my favorite Battletech entries.

oh wow, I need me a PC...
MW2 Mercenaries with my first PC. Later I bought a wireless Logitech joystick solely for these games about when Windows XP just came out, barely used it - what was it MW4 and Heavy Gear? Since moving onto consoles (and of course it started with the Xbox with Mech Assault, lol) it's been displayed on a shelf with my toys. I wonder if it still works.

Oh yeah, and Decision at Thunderift was my favourite read. The Stackpole books were good too. He later went on to write all the Rogue Squadron stuff for Star Wars and prolly did more for the EU than anyone else.

I loved the books from Michael A. Stackpole and Blaine Lee Pardoe. I remember when I was in Grade 7, I emailed Pardoe and challenged him to a Trail of Possession in MechWarrior 3 Online :rotfl. He called me a "freebirth scum", said he was busy with work, and thanked me for being a huge fan. I was pretty ballsy back then, I just didn't care.

I remember Heavy Gear, never played it, though. MW4 had a pretty engaging campaign story that takes place during the FedCom Civil War (which is after the clan invasions). I've been meaning to try out the Black Knight expansion for years now but never got around it.

And... this just happened a few nights ago in MWO. 70 hours later and I'm starting to dominate the leaderboards :lol. If anyone wants to try out MWO, it's free-to-play on Steam.
