This was a great promotion they ran a few months ago. Lets you get rid of some of them old DVD's that you never watch. They take pretty much anything in trade. I got rid of several junk DVD's and was able to upgrade some of my regular versions to BD.

Bring your used DVD to the Customer Service area at a Best Buy store and receive a $5 coupon toward a Blu-ray movie, TV or music title, priced $9.99 or more. Or, check for upgrade eligibility on your mobile phone with a Mobile Phone Specialist to also get a $5 coupon.

My wife had a DVD of a Trading Spaces season. How much do ya think that would be worth?? Well at Best Buy it was worth $5.

I'm a little surprised to read all the snarky comments here. $5 for a used DVD nowadays is actually a pretty good deal. And they'll take just about anything, even those 1 cent sampler discs you occasionally see at Best Buy and public domain titles from the Dollar Store.

I've been systematically selling off/trading-in my DVDs over the past year or so (physical media is so early-aughts ) and I can confirm that most used discs - especially popular titles - aren't worth jack. Rip 'em, grab those $5 coupons (more often than not, the best deal you're gonna get) and buy yourself a Blu or two.

Honestly, with the discounts you get on Amazon, it's cheaper to shop there, bulk up to $30 and utilize the free shipping option. You don't even have to leave home or worry about grabbing one before they sell out. And at the end of the day you still have hard copies of your media should a virus tear through your system and destroy all the digital copies. Sometimes it pays to be an "early-aught," not throwing all your faith in unproven mediums.

Fair enough but I suppose it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. In spite of my playful aside, I just wanted to get rid of my DVDs, not any and all forms of physical media. Most of what I had is usually readily available on Netflix and it was simple enough to rip, acquire through other means, or "upgrade" the other titles to Blu.

I'm just saying that if you're looking to unload some DVDs with the express purpose of upgrading to Blu-ray (or even buying a completely different title), it's a rock solid option. Certainly moreso than trading those discs in to Amazon for 25 cents or selling them for 2 bucks a pop on eBay.

Plenty of good titles are available this week at the $9.99 price point, too. $5 (and a redundant hard copy of some 10 year-old title...am I really gonna watch Red Dragon again?) for a beautiful high-defintion Blu-Ray? That tickles m'retail sweet spot.

I get ya. And it definitely makes sense, especially if you don't have the room. Another bonus to keeping the DVDs is when kids wanna watch a movie, you can pass them the DVD and not have to worry about getting back a BR that looks like someone was doing figure-eights on the face with ice skates.

Just in the fact that data can easily be lost (I've already lost my iTunes library like 3 times. Thankfully I still have all the CDs I uploaded so only time was lost. ). It's always good to have a back-up. Even better if that back-up is a "hard copy" DVD.

Because this is a $5-off coupon, I would use this only with very old DVDs that I know I will never watch again.

I'm pretty sure the fine print will say that you can't combine with any other offers or stack multiple coupons, so, for example, bring in 5 old DVDs and walk out with one new BD.

best Buy has a ton of great BDs for $9.99. So you are gonna be paying $4.99 OOP when you trade in a disc. I don't understand how people don't see this as being a good deal.

Trade it in at Movie Stop and get a buck or Amazon and get .25 credit. Or do this and be able to buy some decent BDs for $5.

And no they can't be stacked. One coupon per one purchase.

I actually took advantage of this deal last time with some old discs that were worth under a buck at amazon. Ended up getting around 12 BD's for $5 each. All I wanted or wanted to upgrade anyway.

This is true. 1 per disc. BUT, I snagged a copy of Fast Times last go-round by using both the $5 off and a Universal $3 coupon so you can use them alongside other offers. I ended up paying $2 and some change out the door.
