Most spin-offs, like most movie sequels, have bad reputations. But there are some spin-offs, just as there are some movie sequels, that are not only as good as the predecessor but sometimes better. Name your favorite spin-offs here!

1) Frasier - I would argue this is the best spin-off ever. Way funnier than Cheers.

2) Star Trek: The Next Generation - It's debatable which Trek is the best, but TNG is my favorite of all the Treks. I think it improved upon the original but has never been topped by anything that came after it.

3) Xena: Warrior Princess - Xena's dark background is far more interesting than that of Herc's. I did enjoy both show's early seasons as they aired though.

4) The Legend of Korra - The one spin-off on my list that I wouldn't say is better than the original, but it is a worthy continuation of the world established in The Last Airbender.

I can't even think of a fifth show worth mentioning off the top of my head. I'm sure someone will list some that I'll kick myself for not mentioning.

The Jeffersons, Happy Days, Justice League Unlimited, maybe Super Powers?

Pseudo spin-offs I really enjoyed: Space Ghost: Coast to Coast/Cartoon Planet, Sealab 2021, Newhart

Fighting words!

I enjoy Next Gen and DS9 more than the original series. I guess Simpsons is a spin-off, though it was it's own show within the Tracey Ullman Show before being spun-off. And considering that, it goes to the top of the list of course. I guess Beavis and Butthead (and the film Office Space!) is also a spin-off of Liquid Television.

It's a sequel staring same characters. :wink1:

Nah, it was part of the show regardless.

LT was an animation showcase and Frog Baseball was a short film.
Sounds like a pretty arbitrary way of allowing Simpsons but not those others to me! :D But you are correct in each instance. JLU is actually the most traditional kind of spin-off.

How is Newhart a spin-off?
If you haven't watched the last episode, then I won't spoil it for you ;) but I call it a pseudo-spin-off.

I saw the last episode of Newhart and it was a great way of ending the series but the show other than the last episode had nothing to do with The Bob Newhart Show. You can't really say it was a spin-off in any way.

In Japan, Dragonball Z really is just Dragon Ball set several years after the prior series. The first series ended, and later that month Z premiered.

I call it a pseudo spinoff because it wasn't intended to be one. But if you treat the last episode as reality then the show is a direct continuation of the Bob Newhart show of course.

King of Queens was not really a spin-off of Everybody Loves Raymond, they just appeared on each other's shows. Kind of like when the Beverly Hillbillies appeared on Green Acres and Petticoat Junction.

That's what a spin-off is. Take a character that appeared on Raymond, and give him his own show.
