I just came across a wonderful article about 1:6 scale modeling on Wikipedia. At the end of the article, they list numerous companies that produce 1:6 figures. Infact, I think they include all of them...except...SIDESHOW! :google

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1:6_Scale_Modeling

that articel was written by some guys from the one sixth warrior forum, and to put it kindly, they don't think too much of sideshow.:rotfl

Depends. I'm a member there and a lot of people at OSW think VERY HIGHLY of Sideshow and its great representations of untapped historical eras and licenses.

While there's a large variety of opinions and interests, Sideshow fans are a big part of OSW. Granted not everyone likes Sideshow -- I think the biggest beefs are with the bodies -- but overall Sideshow's figs are a popular topic of interest there.

Do you know specifically who over at OSW wrote it?

and while i agree sideshow, for the most part makes a great product, most folks there would rank dragon, bbi(when they made stuff), DiD, hot toys, toy soldier, ACE, etc...over sideshow(mainly because sideshow does not really make any WW2 or modern stuff, which is what that forum really caters to)

:lol That is cool!!

That listing from the guy over at OSW is terribly incomplete. I mean they don't even list Medicom in the history of 1/6 scale modeling and I think they were really the ones who started the modern 1/6 craze in Asia which spread to the US and all over the world from there; yet they list Armoury, RMC and most puzzling of all.....New Line Miniatures. Medicom had far more impact then all of those manufactures combined.
Also, no mention of Sideshow Collectables in 1/6 modeling's history.

Medicom figures are only 10.5-11 inches in height.
and if you're saying that's 1/6 scale, then you're wrong.
1/8 scale is 9 inches.
1/6 scale is 12 inches.

10.5 MUST be 1/7 scale.

And not that I'm arguing that Medicom meant the fiugures to be 1.7,
Because I'm sure they just tried to make the scale a little more realistic than placing every figure at 6 foot tall. But then they got "lazy" and decided not to have different body versions in relation to height....

however I'm mainly disagreeing screaming metal's comment about Medicom starting the 1.6 craze.

it was actually the traditional vintage GI JOES that started the 1:6 craze...or mainly for adults.
They were nostaligic of the old GI JOE toys they had played with and they got back into it, like the fans of Star wars, etc.

21st Century toys was after GI Joe toys (i think) and then the better companies like DML(Dragon), BBI, and more, came out with better quality figures with better bodies, costumes, weapons, etc.

newline miniatures makes one of the best 1/6 scale realistic boots and footwear.

Then, I guess other companies like MEGO, Hasbro, and Mattel made some other celebrity or movie based 1/6 figures and Medicom picked it up to a greater quality like DML and BBI.

and sideshowcollectibles, should indeed have been up there.
I agree with that :D
I'm guessing the writer of that article was more entitled and knowledgable about the original 1/6 modeling history regarding military figures, and sideshow slipped by, even though sideshow does make a good deal of military figures as well.

Medicom not 1:6 scale, really?
Well I have the Medicom Judge Dredd figure that's 11" tall, and when you convert Sly Stallone's height of 5' 9" into 1/6 it comes out to 11.1/2 inches. Just a 1/2" shorter then he needs to be, but that kind of discrepancy is also seen from Sideshow on some of their figures which none will deny being intended as 1/6 scale. That means the figure is very close to being in perfect 1/6 scale.
And I believe the Judge Dredd figure was made in 1995, 21st Century Toys didn't exist until 1997.
I think you're wrong on this Sunohc.

The exact scale of Medicom figures is irrelevant, Medicom was the first to show in the contemporary movie & military scale collectable doll craze and push the quality of such dolls ahead of where GI Joe and Action Man had stayed for years, everyone else (21st Century Toys, Dragon) followed.

And I acknowledge GI Joe and Action Man's impact on the hobby. They started the interest to collect older vintage Toys mostly out of Nostalgia I believe, they however had little to do with the contemporary collectable doll interest. People were buying the new stuff not because it was collectable but because it was a vast improvement and more realistic then figures of the past, the Vintage Joe modern releases didn't share that aesthetic and I feel were collected for different reasons (possibly as investments).

I'm not denying the quality of Newline Miniature's products, I have a few of their boot sets and they are the very best out there, it's just that they are relatively newcomers and haven't had as much impact on the 1/6 hobby as Sideshow who I feel at least deserves mention in the article.
:peace

well, i'd have to say that I was making a point that medicom didn't start the craze..if you know what I mean.

I was implying that the 1:6 Scale modeling had actually originiated from the GI JOES and ACtion man figures(as u said) and that people started
KITBASHING, and making their own custom figures and weapons.
then they decided to get some custom headsculpts or modify some simliar ones to make celebrities and then Sideshow Collectibles decided to make those figures that are celebrities, etc.

So the original " 1:6 scale MODELING" community is :rightfully" of the GI JOE enthutiasts since they actually MODEL and KITBASH their figures, as we don't really do that with sideshow figs.
We'll just place them on a shelf and make a nice collection.
You could say that Sideshow and MEDICOM (and hot toys, kayata, etc) revolutionized the High End Collectibles section of 1:6 but they should not be really dominant in the 1;6 MODELING sector..if you know what I mean....

Caz I know some guys like Les, and Custom mikey customize their figures to improve them, but it really originated or started when people customized the GI JOEs into celebrities, etc.

'1:6 scale modeling [aka Playscale Miniaturism] is a hobby focusing on the customization of commercially produced 1:6 scale action figures, accessories and, even, dollhousing.""

not trying to sound like an a-hole, just trying to show you it in a different light.
sideshow and medicom were results of the customized and "modeling" of regular GI joes....
so the guys at OSW are the guys who do this "modeling and customizing".
sideshow COLLECTORS, and medicom collectors don't initially customize every product they get...or modify a headsculpt.
they collect and shelf ;D
