Could someone who plays chess help me out with this question I need for a message board I'm on? I only play it once in a blue moon and I don't really care for it, so it's hard for me to answer this.

"Do you think chess is just a game/pastime? Or does it have more meaning and value in society?"

Thanks! :)

Well I think it can be both.
It is a game /pastime that can be played with friends or with complete strangers.
That being said...I have seen my 11 year old son learn much from this game. He has learned forward thinking and strategy. It is quite fun to have him ask me to play a game that a rough and tumble boy would stay away from.
That is my small take on this wonderful game

I absolutely believe it to be much more than a simple game. If it was a simple game...children would be seen playing it more frequently.

A person who wants to play chess does not necessarily have to know the difference between a Queen's Gambit and the Traxler Variation of the Two Knights Defense in order to enjoy it. But it does take considerable concentration if you truely have any desire to prevail in a match, as the more moves you can anticipate from your opponent, the more successful you will be.

And I believe that the mindset that helps to play chess well can be applied to many facets of day-to-day life and would certainly increase successes in those other aspects as well.

I figure it has just as much meaning to society as any thing else. If the person playing it feels they are bettered by playing it then it has social meaning.

My wife was once an internationally ranked chess master. True story.

As for value to society, it is probably most important in its symbolic use as an analogy/metaphor.

it's a game of kings & queens................:lecture......................:monkey3

that said i love chess & it has meaning & value in society..........

meaning = learning to outmove/out strategize your opponents

value = learn the lesson of meaning and apply it to real life so you can crush your enemies & hear the laminations of the women..............:yess:

it also has social/cultural significance in that international competition (especially between the US and USSR) for better or worse were sources of national pride and rivalry.

I don't know about meaning, but I love the game and believe that it can go a long way to improve ones brain in a lot of ways. I believe that chess, especially when you start using strategy causes you to make connections in your brain that you didn't have before.

same here, i've tried to get back into a number of times over the last 20 years, but sadly i just don't have the feel for it anymore. when i quit playing back in school it was on a sour note and just lost interest in the game. fackin coach:mad:

What happened... did he try to touch your rook?

Tried to Pawn the Kings Bishop into bringing the Knight into the Castle so he could turn him into a Queen.....:peace

:lol:lol i should've known it would go that way. no it was kinda like the top player in our club threw a game against me so that i could go to finals along with him.

it didn't sit well with me after i found out and i quit playing at that point, i think i was around 12 yrs old.
the really stupid think was that in the end i couldn't go anyways since for some reason i had to be at least 15 yrs old to go and only the player that threw the game was allowed to go in the end.
