I have been waiting for this announcement, but didn't think it would come so soon:

Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here’s what’s in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

As a special thank you to our newsletter subscribers, we’d like to offer you all $10 off any order of $60 or more placed on on criterion.com through Monday, May 26. Just use the code OFBT and you’ll also qualify for free shipping.

Enjoy spring!

This isn't the most exciting lineup possible, but to me the important thing is that they will be going high def. There are a lot of titles that I will happily repurchase on Blu-ray.

For now, I will get the two you mentioned, plus 400 Blows, Wages of Fear and Last Emperor.

This is awesome, but most of those movies will hardly gain any clarity in the PQ department just because they are going to BR. But hopefully they are remastered for BR completely, not just copied over from the DVD master.

I already have Criterion's previous release of "The Third Man" and I just watched it this past Sunday! Looking forward to some of these other releases, and I, too, am jonesing for some Kurosawa. :monkey1

I just got the newsletter. I already own a ton of Criterion titles... I know there will be a few I'll pick up on Blu-ray. Of those listed, The Third Man and The Man Who Fell to Earth for sure.

That's great news. Wonder what their prices will be like now? They're already high as is.:google

"they will be priced to match our standard-def editions."

That's from the information tomandshell gave. So it looks like they will be the same, which is good! I can;t wait to get some Criterion Blu-rays! Awesome news indeed. Thanks Tom!

Pardon my ignorance, but do you need to part of a newsletter or club to order Criterion... or does it just help. I've never actually seen them for sale anywhere, but have always been blown away when I've watched them.

you can get them in stores (although it may take a special order) until they go out of print (or sell out).

then expect the price to spike on eBay - like RoboCop.

They sell them at most online retailers like deepdiscount and dvdplanet.

Cool, good to know. There are definitely some titles I'd like to get from them... just need to make that BluRay shift first :lol

I have the Criterion edition of Robocop on DVD. That will be another great one to have on Blu-ray.

And the Kurosawa films, without doubt.
