I heard this somewhere...I remember I went to the doctors, because of a knee pain and the stupid asked if I could live with the pain, then got me some Ibuprofen. No X-ray MRI nothing.:cuckoo:

What's up with that ?

Some doctors will do more than necessary, if they either have a fee-per-service insurance-related issue (as Medicare has worked), or if they are concerned about potential malpractice accusations, and want to cover their butts.

You don't hear much about doctors doing less than necessary, though this could happen after 2014 when the health reform act is more fully implemented. There are provisions that are set up to essentially allow doctors to be paid for treating patients "appropriately," rather than excessively (doctors could be more prone to missing things). It sounds to me like the doctor genuinely didn't think you needed an x-ray or whatever, though you could have requested one.

My dentist told me doctors get essentially nothing for HMOs, which is why many doctors won't even take it.

I used to have a dental HMO and the dentist did a crap job on my crown, presumably since he wasn't getting paid much.

Doctors hate HMOs because they argue with them over everything and refuse to pay for a lot of things. My HMO won't even pay for blood work! I have to pay out of pocket for a ton of things. Actually, I'm beginning to believe I'd be better off paying out of pocket for most of my dental and medical things because I've only had insurance for 1 year and I've paid out more in this year than I've ever paid out. I told my mother that I'm through getting tests and other things done. If my GP can't handle it himself, I'll just suffer.

Something has to be done with health care here. They HAVE to do something. I know some of you who have wonderful health care don't agree, but more and more people who had great health care are losing it and a lot of places have bare minimum coverage. I know people who've lost their homes due to medical bills. I'm sorry, but if this country will pay for illegals' health care, then they should help with working peoples' too!

hmm...............interesting, i havent even had health care or dental for a year. Been lucky so far, except i do have a health disorder and i cant go to a doctor about it until i get some medical.

I have Medicare thank goodness but I still paid out the arse for my cancer treatment. I had to put most of it on my bankruptcy.

But..the only time I received shoddy medical treatment was when I got a back injury at work, and Target sent me to one of their approved doctors who declared me 'cured' simply because it didn't hurt me to bend my knees. (?)

MY doctors tend to over-treat me. They're insisting I get another ultrasound on my neck soon but I simply can't afford it.

Me and my family could go on and on about healthcare and doctors. My Dad passed away from cancer and there was so much that went wrong those couple of years that my Mom could have tried to sue, but no lawyer wanted to touch the case.

Yet since I gotten my short term disability, I've had 2 successful back surgeries, a cancer scare and countless other blood work ups. I went from "I don't see how you are walking on your own" to 2 hours of physical therapy and little to no pain. So it's a love/hate thing with me and doctors. There are a few good ones out there, just far and few between imo.

I don't practice over there, but from other colleagues experiences HMO's do dictate the medical practice to a certain degree. For instance, if you perform less than a certain number of scans a year, the HMO gives the doctor a bonus. That's pretty sad. As for doctors, there are good and bad.

Sorry to hear about that shiveringmelody.

In the 70's, when healthcare costs first began to skyrocket in the face of Medicaid, they introduced Diagnosis Related Groups to contain it. DRG's were allotments that paid doctors for a specific number of cases related by diagnosis. If they treated more than the DRG allowed, they were still only paid for the quota. If they treated fewer, they were still paid for the whole quota. If I understand correctly, HMO's evolved out of that system.
