Does anyone here Box?

I am starting to get into it, been wanting to work out for a while now since I am a skinny kid and I want to get some muscles before I get to old to get any:monkey3. And with the inspiration of the Rocky Movies I decided to incorporate boxing as my main focus behind working out. I plan to get a heavy and speed bag stand soon with a 100 lb HB and prob 11x9 speed bag.

Just curious who else here boxes and if they have any comments or suggestions for beginners or just want to talk about it.
 
I've been boxing since i was a kid,living in the inner city you have to know how to box, and it's kept me in shape. my wife hates it so i go when i get a chance.keep at it,it helps out in the bedroom:lol
 
lol..i was thinking about this a while back. i dont box but im into brazilian jiu jitsu. and they say its easier to put on muscle weight when you get older because your metabolism slows down...so you down burn it off. but yeah i use a speed bag and jump rope for coordination and cardio training. i haven't been doing anything since may because i got swallowed in my summer classes but i plan on getting back into it very soon.
 
I'm interested to hear how far you intend to pursue this sport. Do you just want to train? Do you want to compete? Jump rope. As hairlesswookiee said, it's great for co-ordination and cardio training. I find it really helps with stamina as well. Start off with it as a warm up. Say five minutes and end with another five minutes at the end of your training. Build it up to ten minutes, when you feel comfortable doing so, and so on. If you want to compete, you'll need stamina.
 
Ive trained MMA and kickboxing for many years. All I can say is "repetition, repetition, repetition", while being mindful of your form.
 
I'm a scrappy little Irishman, so I'll take you guys on if it's bareknuckled. Remember Brad Pitt in SNATCH? :lol

Well as of right now I am doing it as part of my exercise routine, I plan to eventually start jogging and what not, but we'll see where it takes me. My brother boxes so maybe in the future we will start sparring, but I'm not sure about competing.
 
I am a body builder (in constant training) and still indecisive if I want to bulk up for a new show. I like being ripped. Yes, I am clean. I am too small to be otherwise. lol Better decide soon since the next show is in March.

Either way, boxing is a good way to build muscle, but I still think weight lifting is a good way to manipulate your muscle structure, shape, and tone up your entire body. Need to go for the full symmetry look. Looks better than the top heavy "bar body" look that a lot of guys go for. Legs are just as important as your upper body folks.

Anyway, just figured I would suggest that since you want to gain some muscle. But I am looking into some sort of martial arts training myself. Brazilian jujitsu (jiu jitsu) and boxing would be two things I would be interested in getting in.. since one teaches you to fight while standing up, and the other is pretty much grappling and wrestling while on the ground, where most fights end up.

Boxing is a great activity, and certainly builds the stamina, coordination and muscle tone. Some things you will want to keep in mind though, if you intend on using it as a method of self defense. You must condition your hands and wrists for impact without gloves or tape. Some of the most common injuries to the hands are broken metacarpals and wrists when the force applied to them exceeds the strength of the bones, ligaments and tendons. Try doing your push ups on your fists. Also make sure you practice folding your fists tightly. A common injury is from the fist not being balled tightly enough and the fists partially collapses on impact injuring the knuckles.

I'll take that as a compliment Eli. It makes me feel like the last 22 years I've spent studying fighting arts have been worthwhile.
