Edward Woodward, who was known for his roles in The Wicker Man and The Equalizer, has died aged 79.

The veteran actor had been suffering from various illnesses, including pneumonia, and died in hospital, his agent said.

Janet Glass released a statement saying: "Universally loved and admired through his unforgettable roles in classic productions such as Breaker Morant, The Wicker Man, Callan, The Equalizer and many more, he was equally fine and courageous in real life, never losing his brave spirit and wonderful humour throughout his illness."

The first thing I ever saw him in was The Wicker Man, but my favorite thing he was in has to be Callan. A couple of years ago I got my hands on uncut versions of all The Equalizer episodes. I tore through them and then went looking for more. Callan was recommended to me as portraying a younger version of McCall and after seeing it I definitely agree. Callan is really a uk spy classic and it is a shame it is not better known.

Basically, before he was angry retired secret agent Robert McCall in The Equalizer, he was angry active secret agent David Callan in Callan. Callan had a pilot episode, four seasons between 1967 and 1972, a cinema film in 1974, and a tv movie in 1981. Seasons 1 and 2 were black and white and not all of them still exist, but seasons 3 and 4 were done in color and they and the film have all been released on dvd.

In the commentary to one of the 4th season Callan episodes, Woodward said he was the one who actually shot the lightbulb when the title sequence was being filmed.
