Ok, momentum and FOMO are pushing me towards preordering Captain Sulu, but he’s got some serious issues that need to be addressed. The sculpt is just barely passable in my judgment and as @davejames pointed out, that low belt MUST be fixed or he’ll look discordant with the rest of the TWOK style crew! This is another seemingly unforced error as it stands at the moment. I guess they’ll have to come through AGAIN with production improvements. So do I take a chance with a preorder?

Yes, you do!!!!!

I haven't been following EXO-6 very long, and I only have a few TNG figures, though I am seeing what seems to me to be a lot of criticism of Sulu (not at all disputing any of the mentioned issues), though I am wondering if the same level of criticism has been applied to some of the other figures/sculpts from other lines? Again, I have not followed EXO-6 for long so I honestly do not know, though some of the previously released figures and sculpts that I have seen left a lot to be desired (my opinion) and I am just wondering if Sulu is being scrutinized more because everyone has higher expectations for the original crew, or if the other figures were equally scrutinized?

I'd say there's definitely some of that. We've been waiting on these TWOK era figures since the moment EXO picked up the license, and we're only now seeing them begin to be produced.

Also, EXO has been showing some MASSIVE improvement in likeness and especially paint applications lately (the SNW figures immediately come to mind), so they have for sure elevated our expectations in that category.

Lastly, yes, these Original Series characters are some of our most cherished portrayals in all of Sci-Fi and even TV/Movies in general, so we are certainly hoping these are treated with that much more care in all categories. The strange thing that seems to have captured our notice lately is that EXO's indisputable advantage over much if not all of the competition has been the incredible attention to tailoring and attire detail. Then the baggy fit of Dr. Bashir's, and Hoshi's uniform (not to mention Hoshi's proto sculpt), and now add Cpt. Sulu's low belt, and most of us EXO junkies are left scratching our heads. The fit and finish of these uniforms used to be the one thing we never had to worry about because of EXO's reputation in these areas, and these latest few, then, seem like unforced errors because we KNOW they have the capability to knock these uniforms out of the park.

Well we know it should at least look 10% better than the promo pics, as most of them do, so if you think you can be content with that then you should order. But I wouldn't put too much hope on them completely revising the sculpt or fixing every issue.

For me the sculpt is at about 90% from straight on, and 80% from other angles, but that's fairly consistent with most Exo sculpts in my book, so I can live with it.
