Fangoria 300 Horror Movie Guide

picture.php

In an attempt to rot my brain and waste more time than is probably advisable, I have decided to attempt to watch every film on the Fangoria 300 list from their 300th issue. Not being a regular collector of this magazine, I ordered this issue when I saw in the preview that they were going to make this list of 300 recommendations. Working my way through the extensive list, it has become painfully obvious that I’ve missed out on many many horror films. Although it will probably take me more than a couple of years to complete, I’m going to attempt to watch all of these one way or another.

Some I own and watch regularly, and others I have never even heard of. What follows is my simple system devised to keep track of what I own, have seen, etc. I’m going to be going after the Criterion selections first for purchsse, because I’m already collecting that series anyway. Many of the other selections however, will simply be borrowed from friends or viewed through Netflix. Then, I am sure there will be others which are hard to track down. I’ll keep my list in the car so when I am find myself at Fry’s or Zia, I can pick some of them up.

Let the fun begin!

Status System:
Own - a film on the list which I feel is worthy of ownership, either from its excellence on the rating scale, or due to one or more of the three special honors, and is also currently in my collection.
Buy - a film on the list which seems worthy of a purchase, either from the review printed, from years of interest, or by simply being a Criterion selection.
BBS (Beg, Borrow, or Steal) - a film which I am dubious about and will therefore borrow before committing to a purchase.
Status Subcategories:
Review - a film which I have seen, but cannot recall, and is up for review.
Unviewed - a film which I have never seen.

One Word Rating System:
(my rating system leans toward the bad side because, lets face it, so much schlock is produced in the horror genre and so many good intentions fall short of what is possible in these films)
A + = Stupendous - a must own which is viewed several times per year. Reserved for only ten!
A = Amazing - this film should also be in every fans collection.
B = Fantastic - worthy of ownership, with contributions to the horror genre.
C = Average - middle of the road here, not without it’s merits.
D = Mediocre - less than average, a failed attempt by the filmmakers.
E = Terrible - worth a single view, if you can manage or enjoy schlock.
F = Abysmal - a pile of garbage, unworthy of viewing or owning.
Special Honors:
(a film may carry one or more of these special honors in conjunction with any rating above)
Horrific - truly frightening, and what I am seeking in a great horror film.
Laughable - a film so bad it’s good, worthy of inclusion in the collection regardless of rating.
Noteworthy - a film so obtuse or notorious it garners inclusion in the collection.

61 down / 239 to go!
Films in bold have been viewed and have my rating attached.
Films which I have a specific post with review or otherwise will have a direct link.

Today I viewed a borrowed copy of:

Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) which garners the rating of: C - Average/Noteworthy

The special effects were pretty awesome and I liked the use of animation over the actual film to create both electrical elements and Dracula's transformations into the bat. A very nice feature was the cameo appearance (or lack thereof) of the Invisible Man just at the end. The film was a nice blending of horror and comedy, especially I would assume for the time period it was produced in. I felt that the interplay between Chaney Jr.'s seemingly very serious acting and the comedy of Abbot & Costello was well executed. Whether they planned that or not is beyond me.

This morning I finished viewing a borrowed VHS copy of:

City of the Living Dead (1980) which garners the rating of: E - Terrible

I must have forgotten viewing this a couple of years ago, and my friend offered to loan me his VHS copy. That actually turned out to be one of the more entertaining parts of this viewing. I had forgotten the whirring of videotape. I have not seen a VHS tape in the five and a half years since moving into my new home, but I dug out my old player, hooked it up, and off we went.

This movie was pretty terrible, but I could not drop it to the abysmal grade level because some of the effects were pretty on point. The soundtrack was decent as well. The overall mood and atmosphere of the film was creepy enough, but the plot and meandering about with not real story line left me confused and somewhat lost. Another thing I appreciated was the camera work, and although some of it was wooden and predictable, there was definite quality in the production. Worth a single view, and Fulci has deep roots in the zombie genre, but I have no desire to sit through this one again any time soon.

Today I netflixed:

The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2010) which garners the rating of: E - Terrible/Noteworthy

I was enjoying the atmosphere of this one until the notorious moments in the film. We all know what this one is about, but even so, I did actually become nauseous at times during the last half of the film. So you could say it did at least elicit a response from me.

Enough said... :yuck

I too am a survivor of the movie known as "Human Centipede", I feel your pain. :(

Tonight I netflixed:

The Blob (1988) which garners the rating of: C - Average

I enjoyed watching this one way more than I thought I would. The effects were pretty alright for their time and are obviously dated now. There were a few instances where you could see a clear demarkation between the actors portion of the scene and the laid in effects, which I assume were all done optically. Reminiscent of the dark lines around the cockpit of the snowspeeders in ESB which have since been lessened or removed. The acting and story were pretty alright, although I kept finding myself thinking Aliens. Then I realized this came out two years after Aliens. The blob made noises like the Queen and the heroine in this film has a few lines which are similar to those of Ripley. Still, I enjoyed this one a lot. Maybe I like my horror just a bit on the funny side, but with those serious overtones.

Tonight I netflixed:

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) which garners the rating of: D - Mediocre

This is another example of a film which I have never seen which I was expecting more from. Clowns are one of my all time most scared of things (probably due to Poltergeist and my exposure to that film as a child), but these klowns were so laughable there was nearly nothing to be frightened of. There were at least three laugh out loud moments, so at least I had that. I won't be adding this to my buy list, and I'm going to be digging for something to watch now which is more serious. Too many laughs in horror is not a good thing for me. I know we typically need a few moments like that in a good scare film with a lot of tension, but it seems like a lot of what is on the list thus far is more funny than scary. Where is the scary?

Scary? The scary is back in your childhood. I watch horror for the atmosphere, the effects, suspense etc, very rarely do I take a horror movie seriously. Like The Shining for example. But I think your taking things like Killer Klowns way too seriously, its a grindhouse horror movie.

Sometimes you just know you cannot make a movie that stacks up in the genre like Halloween 3. Your not going to top Myers, so they just made this weird story and had fun with it. It gets alot of hate, but if you look past the fact that it is Halloween something, its a fun flick.

Alot of horror comedy like Dead Alive or Evil Dead 2 follow similar formulas. I dare say, if your not feeling these sort of things, your going to have a hard time with this list.

I suppose I should have said where is the horrifying horror. I'm enjoying all of these films even though so many are bad, that is definitely part of the charm. It's just that I already know I don't like comedy or laugh out loud that much, and yet I am finding so much of it in the genre. You are absolutely right about the scary being "back in your childhood." I only hope that I can recapture that horror that I felt as a child when sneaking a watch of of the forbidden films, either at a friends or when Mom was out and didn't know. I mean, maybe its just recollection, but Myers still gets me every time I watch the film intently. I get chills almost every time, and God help me if I'm home alone and its dark. The closets and under the bed must get checked ten times each. So I'm just looking for a taste of that again, and enjoying the ride through the annals of horror history as Fangoria sees it. This is after all their list, and I'm just following it blindly. I've found glaring omissions and strange inclusions on the list so far. But, I love films, good or bad, and just wanted another insane pastime. I know that at some point along the way, there will be those chiller moments I like so much.

Off to peruse the list and find something horrific for tonight. :D

March 1, 2011

Last night I viewed a borrowed VHS copy of:

The Day of the Triffids (1963) which garners the rating of: C - Average

I was pleasantly surprised by this one, and slightly entertained. Overall it felt like a bridge between War of the Worlds and Little Shop of Horrors, but still held its own. While viewing I looked it up, because this is one I have never heard of, and found it has already been remade twice, with a third remake coming at the hands of Sam Raimi. If that comes to pass, it should prove quite entertaining as well.

Okay, I'm finally back after the madness that was March with tons of work and school to be taken care of. Following are the three I was able to complete during the remainder of March. There just was no time. I received my four Criterion films and have been able to fully watch one of them reviewed below...

_____

Sometime in March...

Netflixed:

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) which garners the rating of: C - Average

Another one which I was pleasantly surprised by. It started out so obtuse and I had heard rather interesting things about this one from my Horror pal at work, but when I finally got into it, I was drawn into the whole plot, and weirdness of it all. And the crowning jewel of this flick is Price's performance, which I found to be quite stellar, as strange as his character was. I enjoyed this on thoroughly.

_____

Some other time in March...

Netflixed:

Alice Sweet Alice (1977) which garners the rating of: D - Mediocre

This film just lost me, and I'm not even sure what was going on for part of it. There were some nice kill scenes with the ubiquitous 70's blood, and a first film role for Brooke Shields, but overall, I guess I just didn't like the convolute plot. I know I should give it another try some day to work out those details I must have missed. Definitely dug the oversized landlord with all his cats though.

_____

April 10, 2022

Watched my first new cross referenced Criterion/Fangoria bluray:

Antichrist (2009) which garners the rating of: B - Fantastic

If you have not seen this film, I recommend it. While quite graphic and at times a bit boring, the look of the film is amazing. The textures, compositions, and overall cinematography lend this film brilliance. That is not to detract from its story line and plot aspects. There is a lot left to the imagination of the viewer as far as dissecting this volatile film for meaning, but at the same time, little is left to our imagination with regard to the pornographic nature of the film. I think I was shocked from the start when the average, albeit extremely slow motion, shower love scene suddenly flashed to a giant _______ making penetration. That one moment alters our perception of what we are about to witness in this film and it only gets worse as far as graphic imagery is concerned.

At any rate, I am happy to own this beautiful film, and can heartily recommend it to any mature viewer, but honestly don't see myself making repeated viewings of this one. Awesome nonetheless.

61 down / 239 to go!
