re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

My "got it" from childhood remains GI Joe issue 1. My first comic book was issue 33, and I quickly started collecting right after that. My neighbor, who was admittedly my best friend during my childhood started collecting comics when I did. He always had everything he wanted. Even though he was Jewish, the family celebrated Christmas and he always had every single action figure and play set. Everything! At times, it was a bit discouraging, because my family was of lesser means. So our comic shop of choice was called Trilogy, and there were three of them in town. Go figure. We had visited one of the more distant locations with his mom, and saw the issue 1. He planned to go back and get it, but I had other plans. On the ride home, I devised my evil scheme. I called my mother at work, and somehow, someway, convinced her to go buy the $20 comic book for me. I'm sure I promised a multitude of chores, grass cutting, dishes, vacuuming, etc. Whatever I promised, worked. Because my mom was wonderful that day, and went to the shop, which was kind of on her way home, and got me my GI Joe issue 1!

And, I still have that comic! 30 years later. It is priceless to me. :D

That's so cool buddy, yay mom! Did your friend find out you got it? lol

Oh, and I love Charlize Theron's name in Fury Road: Imperator Furiosa. It sounds like a spell in Harry Potter. :lol :lol

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

I think mine is probably the big T-Rex from the original Jurassic Park. My brother and I had been wanting that toy for such a long time, but we never thought we'd get it because it was really big and pretty expensive. One day, my mom and grandpa said they were going to take us there and buy it. We were so happy we could hardly contain our excitement. There was a flood that day, but my grandpa drove us over to Venture and we got the Tyrannosaurus Rex. It was so freaking awesome. The best toy we had. I must've shot him with my Malcolm figure's tranquilizer gun a thousand times or more.

Is that the one that has the roaring sound when you press her sides?

Awesome, yeah I still have her! Her original batteries still worked up until 2 years ago I believe, when the 3D version came out on my birthday. She lasted 20 years!!!

I think my mom accidentally gave away all my JP toys several years ago. I was pretty sad when I went to look for them and couldn't find them.

Aw man :(

I still have all my figures. They are in a few shoeboxes lying around.

[...]I don't feel like getting my ass handled to me buy basement gamers for hours on end.

I remember the first time I played Starcraft on Battlenet, all those years ago. Was also the last. :lol

I did play online with/against my friends, though. That was fun and lasted longer than 33 seconds or whatever.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

Crazy my first real collecting experience that i can remember was when me and my friends discovered Ebay haha. I was looking for a Yugioh card. Once i knew what i found i started searching for Jurassic Park toys. Though my mom never let me buy anything. It wasn't until TPM when my mom new she had a son who loved collecting. I begged and searched for Darth Maul for weeks. Then my Uncle who lived in LA at the time found one and shipped him to me on my birthday. still have it carded. not worth anything but nostalgic to me.

Taking some time for myself and finally getting around to watching the VHS copy of GI Joe the Movie I picked up a few weeks ago. I think I'll hang some stuff on my walls too.
I still have my GI Joe Movie and Transformers Movie VHS tapes, the only VHS tapes I held onto. Too bad I don't have a VCR :lol
Did you get the Cobra Commander sculpt from Pacemaker? I got mine in today, it's incredible. Guy really did impressive and very clean work.
No I didn't, but it looks amazing. I used a Sideshow dome and a Viper face mask for mine and am very happy with it, so I passed on his.
So while I was laying in bed last night thinking about KD's custom Quick Kick, it reminded me of one of my favorite toy-gets as a kid.

I had been looking for Quick Kick because I loved Joe and I loved Bruce Lee and other martial arts movies that were always on back then. Couldn't find him anywhere. One day my Mom took me grocery shopping (Food Town in Woodbridge, for you Jersians). Inexplicably, in the frozen food section - the part with the open coolers - there was a box of Joe figures, full of Quick Kicks! My Mom was very generous but you couldn't just get something every time we went out. So she told me if I stood on the Customer Service line for her to redeem a coupon she had, I could get Quick Kick. Needless to say I rocked Customer service hard, and my Mom got her $1 rebate. And I got the spokesman for Frozen Fudgies. To this day QC is one of my favorite figures and I feel compelled to buy whatever version of him gets released.

Anybody else have a favorite "I got it!" story from childhood?

The first toy I really remember questing for was He-Man's Moss Man figure. I remember multiple trips to Kay Bee Toys, heading straight to He Man section and frantically searching through the shelves for Moss Man. For whatever reason he was insanely difficult to find, at least in my perception. Making seemingly hundreds of trips to look for him, which I sure was probably like 10 times :lol...We didn't get to go the mall to much when I was a kid. I eventually found him one day at K Mart. Twas a glorious day indeed.

So leia and han walk into a bar and get together... Han says, "I'm going to be truthful, I'm the size of a baby." Leia says, "That's okay I'm flat chested." Well they enjoy their evening and make it to the hotel room... and...

they get undressed. Han says, "Wow your really are flat chested." Leia says, "God damn!" Han says, "What?" Leia says, "I thought you said you were the size of a baby?" Han says, "I am, 8 pounds and 21 inches."

That's the first collecting story I've heard that starts with Ebay. You make me feel very old, Jorah.

Maybe Moss Man nostalgia plays a role in your lawn situation.

My first Joe was Stalker. I'm starting to think GI Joe taught me about diversity while a lot of my Staten Island friends were racist boneheads.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

Possibly. I lost my Moss Man. Left him out in our front yard one day and never found him again. 99% sure one of our dogs ran away with it, but I was hard broken and I never got another Moss Man :monkey2

Maybe he was reclaimed by the Earth from whence he came.

R.I.P Moss Man.

G I Joe really did have a widely diverse collection of people, though many where blatant stereotypes.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

GI Joe taught me that sailors sound like Jack Nicholson.
