ok, so i finish grad school this summer. with that in mind i have to get a real job...while doing so i thought it would be a good idea to continue my education with one or two night classes. any suggestions on what a good "backup" degree?? (i will have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Social Work)

MBA's are always a good degree to get and I know a number of people in mental health that have gotten them through part-time education.

Exactly the advise I was going to give. My brother has a masters in social work and so far he has run to homes for troubled youth and I am sure he wished he had an mba. :lol

Hey wookiee ever thought about a career in the medical field like an AA degree as an X ray technician, or respiratory technician. There's always a need for these jobs and they pay well also most of them require you to work 12 hour shifts so you really only have to work 3 days out of the week more days are optional of course. I got a BA degree in Psychology and a minor in business management and work in the mental health field. But I am going back for Respiratory tech due to the reasons I stated above. By the way congrats on obtaining a Masters degree not an easy accomplishment.

Why would one go to school for 6 years to get a masters and trade that in for a 2 year degree for a job that pays like $40,000 a year?

Yeah exactly your brother does the same type of work I do. Its not very rewarding because you usually never get to see the good things that your work brings to these children. It happens to them later in life and sometimes never at all. If your in the mental health field for recognition and think someone's actually going to say thanks for all the hard work you put in, then your wrong it never happens. Pay is not all that great anyway for all the schooling put in. The government also cuts money to these types of programs constantly which makes doing your job even harder.

Respiratory tech is an AA degree but pays alot more than 40 thousand a year. More like 75 thousand a year plus after the first few years. Registered Nurse is an AA degree as well and look what they pay. There is a huge need for these jobs and they are not in danger of getting budget cuts by the government.

Going back to school for an Associates myself. In the medical field: Radiation Therapy, that's not an x-ray tech. Very excited about the prospect of learning again and once completed, helping people and making a lot more money to boot! And I already have a BFA, which I only really used for three years. People change, a lot!

Good luck!

The world is yours wookie......have you taken the Myers-Briggs self assesment? Find out what you enjoy doing and build upon it.

I earned my first degree 15 years ago. I went back to school a few years back and in May I will earn a second bachelors degree this time in business. I have been accepted into the graduate program were I'll earn an MBA with a concentration in International Business.

I've discovered learning and self development never stop if you wish to remain marketable to employers. Might as well do something rewarding, interesting that can support you (or your family).

lol.....have you ever heard of a Social Worker making a lot of money??? me neither, but i'm more interested in satisfaction of my job. money isn't my sole motivation for going back to school, but the state of Florida passed a bill that waives tuition for combat wounded vets....soooo i plan on using that to its fullest extent. i just want something extra in case i decide to try something new in a couple years.

Around my area, $40,000 is good pay!

I would love to go back to school, but I don't really have the time for it. Working both a full and a part time job takes most of my time, but I don't get alot of money to show for it.

I knew social work doesn't pay squat. I was coming from the standpoint of if you just paid for an education and your field doesn't pay, I think it would be idiotic to start an education in a second field that doesn't pay either! You made a concious decision to go into a field that is more about emotional reward than financial reward, get a start and see if its as rewarding as you hoped. Already making the decision to go for a "backup plan" seems to undermine that initial goal that you spent 6+ years achieving, IMO. You're already throwing in the towel on that education, on that goal.

However, if you go to school for free thats another thing entirely and I would certainly night school and stuff, but I would make it priority #1 to find a job in your field then go back to school.

I got one.... (don't mean to highjack the thread)

Is it possible to get a job soley with being MCSE Certified?????? (no IT Degree)
