It's been a few months since I've sculpted but I thought I might give a childhood favorite the 1/6th treatment. At least his head anyway. Those who've seen The Last Starfighter might remember Grig. A jovial lizard like humanoid played by Dan O'herlihy. Mostly known for his portrayal of the elder ceo of ocp in the robocop films.

Tonight I managed to lay out some of the very basic shapes. It's not much, at all, but it's a start anyway.

More to come.

Re: Grig - The Last Starfighter

Wow, this is one that I never considered anyone would give the 1/6 scale treatment. A childhood favorite of mine, as well. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Awesome :rock :rock I'd love a figure of him and Alex in their flight suits :rock :rock

Re: Grig - The Last Starfighter

Or a 1:1... a few years back I downloaded the game and got to play it. I don't know if a game was originally made for the movie, or if someone created based off of the movie. But it was a blast. And iirc it was designed to be used on a machine, so I had to hit "enter" to add quarters before it would let me play.

It was really awesome to finally play the game I'd seen for so many years in the movie :lol

Re: Grig - The Last Starfighter

Glad to see the Starfighter love here on the board. I kind of wanted to see how the 1/6th scale felt and I like it so far. Depending on how this goes I wouldn't mind doing bits of their suits like the helmet, gauntlets, etc. I'm just no tailor.

A 1/6th arcade would be awesome! Nintendo actually made a console version and you can find the cartridges on ebay. Never played it but I would hope it's like the arcade.

Re: Grig - The Last Starfighter

Really... never new about the Nintendo cart? I'll need to see if I can find that :rock

EDIT Just saw the game play on youtube, and not the same thing I was talking about. What I played actually looked like it the game in the movie, capturing that early CGI look... here's a youtube video of someone playing it. The game is free to download and a lot of fun, but I think it only takes a few minutes to beat.

Yeah, I looked up the nintendo footage and it was horrible. You can still download and play the one in the video you linked though. RogueSynapse

I don't really have a way of taking bluray screen caps so I tend to snap pics right off my tv screen for reference. They're at least better than dvd caps. lol Anyway, I refined a lot of the shapes and got the sculpt looking more like the character.

I've since rounded out his dome a bit more and made other minor changes. I'll likely start working on his eyes next.

Yea the game Nentendo out out was garbage. Def going to play the one you guys are talking about. Maybe if I score high enough Centauri will try and find me and let join in the fight against Xur lol.

Yea...I fecking loved this movie as a kid and still do. Android Alex was the original LMD. Always hoped for a sequel. Subscribing to this thread. Should be a treat :)

Re: Grig - The Last Starfighter - Update 10/2/14

They'd mentioned a sequel a few years back but nothing came of it. I manage to watch this one a couple times a year still. Starfighter came along and struck a pretty deep cord with me. Even deeper than what I got through Star Wars. I was a trailer park kid obsessed with video games and kind of needed an escape as well. So I got it through the movie.

Alrighty . . . I did some of the mouth scaling to get an idea of how that would look. Instead of carving them into the existing clay I laid over smaller bits to get the effect. I also roughed in the eyes and nose. The nostrils are a bit flared and the eyes too wide but I planned on tweaking them considerably anyway. Tell me what you think.
