There's not a whole lot to go on just yet, but it seems that Legion and Fargo creator Noah Hawley is developing a movie at 20th Century Fox involving Fantastic Four villain, Doctor Doom.

Right at the end of tonight's San Diego Comic-Con panel for Legion, Hawley announced that he was working on a new project, which he would only give a brief, but very telling hint about: “I’ll just say two words. The first one is Doctor and the next one is Doom,” he said.

According to THR, Hawley is writing the script with an eye to directing it himself.

Doomed is an appropriate name for this project.

Besides, Dr. Doom is only good when he's interacting with the rest of the Marvel Universe.

This sounds like that Magneto movie that never got made. I rather see Dr. Doom and his country in the MCU, not in some isolated story.

Eh, we'll see. Hawley's good. Fargo may have fizzled out, but that's the gamble with anthologies.

t.hasn't read any DOOM stuff

I'm sorry, but that's in the same way of thinking as saying that only A-Listers should get movies. Not to mention, Doom had a ~40 issue run back in the 90s, multiple minis and whole events built around him. He absolutely can work without much interaction with other "named" characters. I mean, this is pretty much a "King Arthur" type of movie. Knights, Kings, Demons, just in the present day. You don't need Captain America for that. Besides, they can still use the F4 characters. Red Ghost, Diablo, Psycho Man, there are tons of F4 characters that were never used, and who, with some tweaks, could be used as antagonists.

Doom in the MCU would have the flair, but none of the things that make him interesting. Will FOX prevail? Maybe, maybe not. But it doesn't hurt seeing how a solo Doom flick would work. The most unconventional comics are usually the best.

It has nothing to do with his status. Iron Man was a C-list character, but they had bigger plans from the get go.

To me, the idea of a Dr. Doom movie sounds bad, unless they use it as a way to bring the F4 eventually, but at this point, I don't think the F4 are that interesting to carry their own movie.

I don't know if Disney can do better, but considering how well they have expanded their universe, I could see Doom's place in NY, and him having his own country like Black Panther in the MCU. I could see him as a main villain, or simply a very powerful character who is neither a hero or a villain, but has his own reasons for doing things, and as a result sometimes that makes him an antagonist or an ally of the heroes. Not to mention, the MCU has introduced magic and the cosmic elements, and I don't see that kind of world building over at Fox.

MCU could re-introduce the FF individually over several films. Spidey team-up with Torch. Reed with Stark or Strange. Thing with Hulk (or puny Banner). Sue with Namor. Galactus vs. everybody

There was a point where everyone thought Hulk was damaged goods. Now I think he could lead a movie again. The FF can be fixed.

Why do they need to have "bigger plans"? It could just be a standalone mobie about a King who wants to save his mother's soul from Hell. There, there's your hook. You don't need to add in Thor or even Strange to make such a story work.

1. We don't even know what the story is going to be. It's a little premature to start saying "this sounds bad" with virtually no info. We'll see if they say something during the Fox Panel.

2. The F4 absolutely can carry their own film. Just because they've been butchered, doesn't mean the material has not somehow been tarnished.

The MCU cannot do justice to Doom, because if you strip all of the horrific things from him, he becomes stale. The reason why he works is because he's campy, regal, human and monstrous all in one package. Best case scenario, he's the Royal Prince of Latveria who uses the same "magic" as Strange and wants to take over the world. Which just doesn't jive.

Doom's character and suroundings are rooted in folklore and tales. The demons need to be literal demons, with goat legs and horns. The witchcraft needs to be mysterious and creepy. He needs the savagery of an Eastern European country. He just needs more than the MCU can offer.

Yeah, hell and demons and those kind of themes are usually a mainstream turn off...usually. Not that it can't be done, but....I doubt it'll be successful.

I'm just looking at their track record and the way they have treated the characters so far.

They should be able to, but maybe it's Fox fault, maybe it's the source material, or maybe they need to skip the origin, but they just haven't been able to do it.

If we go by their track record, all that is very likely to happen, but we would probably get this at some point, which is not a bad thing, imo.

the ****** link doesn't work here either. It's just Doom fighting the Avengers and the F4. It's awesome :lol

It might not even happen, all things considered. But if I have to choose between the sure chance of a neutered, but succesful Doom in the MCU, and a 25% chance of a "hardcore" Doom in the FoxVerse, I'd rather gamble.

Fair enough, but I think the R-Rated Solo flick model has worked well enough for them to not **** it up this time.

There's nothing wrong with the origin. It's just that they are not sure if they want a modern retelling ala Ultimate, or a feel-good sci-fi Star Trek-esque film, so they put them all together and give us abominable films.

It's that clip from EMH, right? Sure, seeing Doom pwnheroes is good. Or seeing him become GAWD OF EVERYTHANG. But it's like loving Batman just because he CAN TAKE DOWN THE LEAGUAHHHH. It's cool once in a while, but the characters works for other reasons. And I wouldn't mind a character film, so to speak. Just because it's inspired by a capebook doesn't mean it has to follow the structure of super-hero films.

O boy is Tom hardy gonna be in this one to?

People want Mads, but... nah. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like Mads, but Doom's a really handsome mother****er (tiny scar = best scar). Someone like Jude Law or Joauqin Phoenix would be my pick, but I'm also a supporter of the brown eyes/brown hair combo so... I guess you could give them contacts? I'd also thrown Toby Stephens into the ring, considering his role as Captain Flint.

I hope this is worth the wait time between now and the next season of Fargo. :lol

Didn't they say that S3 was the last? At least "for the time being"? I gotta say, I found S3 pretty darn boring. Both Fargo & True Detective started off strong, but faltered in the end. I did enjoy S2 of Fargo more than S1 though.

This probably won't happen

Eh, people were saying the same for New Mutants, and we got casting new a couple of weeks back. If this is another of their "R-Rated Line", I'm positive it has a healthy chance of happening. Maybe it'll be Fant4stic 2.0, but eh, we'll see.

It's time again for another Fox retain-the-rights-because-F-U project.
Pretty much. Every superhero related thing from FOX past XFC was crap so there's no reason to think that they want a good movie out of this one.

Dr. Doom is only good when he's interacting with the rest of the Marvel Universe.

Yeah, I don't think so...

X-Men Origins: Magneto became First Class.

And ya a Doom fighting nobodys = who cares.
