And it's new. The newest in new. Everybody loves the next new thing. Why keep old when you can have new?

The sideshow actually compares pretty favorably. Dammit I have to think about this now, if that HT metallic dome wasn't so pretty it would be a pass.

Yup I agree with this. The HT even had this off putting yellowed appearance that makes it look like an old toy that's been left in the sun.

Whoever would have thought that we'd get a HT Artoo and a Tamashii Artoo within a few months of each other and neither of them seem like good replacements for the Sideshow?

The jury's still out on both though... sorta. Even if there are some concerns about the Tamashii, if it pairs better with 3PO then I'll be happy... sorta. SS R2 has always been a placeholder for me, so I hope I'm not disappointed.

This thread reminded me to look at my SS R2 and 3PO; found the batteries in both had died but hadn't leaked yet. I'm still not sure about this one; I DO like the fact that it doesn't have all the opening panels and such...takes the "toy" out of it.

If I had the SSC version already, I might not be convinced to pick up the HT one based on these initial pics. But, I'm glad to have the HT one on order. Gonna be a great addition to my display, though I have to find a way to fit the ******* in there.

R5-D4 has a bit of that, maybe more extreme than this R2, but I think the R5 prop was more of that off-white than R2 was.

I'm not convinced I'll be replacing my Sideshow R2, but I'll definitely be picking this up to see if it goes with the Tama 3PO better than the Sideshow droid does--which usually reads as plastic next to it. But if you're possibly going to have two R2 figures anyhow, I think the non-opening panels is a plus as they look better and allow for the tilted pose.

I am in the same boat. I also would have not ordered the Ht r2 at the msrp price but I had a $50 sideshow code mailed to me that was going to expire and there was nothing else I wanted so it made the hot toys r2 price more in the range of what I wanted to spend.

I was close to POing this one, but I'd be throwing down over two hundred bucks for a seamless shiny dome and not a whole lot else.

The scale difference between this and the SS is neglible, which is kind of frustrating after all that's been said about it.

Oh well. Saved myself some money I guess.

I'm with you. Not impressed enough to toss $200+ at it and replace my SS version.

Im of the opinion the HT beats SS in every way basically, nothing substantially better, but the dome does makes it worth the upgrade. If the dome is true die cast, and it gives the figure a nice weight, it will for sure put it over the top for me. I always hated how light and cheap the SS one felt..

I really like the SS R2. For the price and the options that it offered with the accessories it was pretty good value at the time. The weight issue for me is not important as I tend to display and leave these things alone. The shinny metalic dome on the Hot Toys is nice, but no other accessories for the $220 USD ..that's $300 CAD. I have a tough time reconciling that...

This might just be the first time people in here are preferring an older SS figure to the newer and flashier HT version. :D

Yeah, lately the price is reversed and the amount of accessories tend to favor the Hot Toys figures. X-Wing Luke vs Farmboy Luke for example.

I agree that the Sideshow R5-D4 is better that their R2-D2. I think really the fact that the panels are all sealed on it makes it feel more sturdy. The R2 feels flimsy in my honest opinion.

I thought they could open it up? I think they started making the droids all heavier after R2. I'll have to weight them later, but I remember comparing R2 to R5 and he was definitely heavier despite having a much more hollow head to him.

No I'm pretty sure all his panels are sealed up or if they open (I haven't tried) they stay in place a lot better. The panel for the bad motivator is all I know of that opens.

That's too bad, in a way. I was expecting more, but I ended up cancelling my pre-order on this. I just don't think it's enough of a step up. The Sideshow cost me $125 (for the ex version), and I'm one of the lucky ones (the seam in the dome is barely visable). It's definitely a light, hollow-feel piece, but outside of the Sail Barge accessories, I use all the other ones. Lights/sounds I don't use as much, but the little arms/radar, etc, I love having. And the open top with Luke's lightsaber will be great when ROTJ Luke is out. Guess I'll wait for HT's next go-around with R2...
