The issue is that you can easily get the SSC R2 for dirt cheap on the secondary market - I bought one for $85 shipped recently - and with a wipe of some rubbing alcohol, the dome and body looks much better (even though, yes, the SSC fig is marginally more undersized than the HT R2 sculpt.)

I'm still trying to get my head around paying $250 for an R2D2. I so wish they had done a "basic" option with this figure where you could get the figure alone minus all the arms for $220. That's still high but for a metal dome it becomes worth it.

I loved my ssc R2d2 and in isolation it’s wonderful. The lights are great and the details are great. I’m definitely not knocking it.
The hot toys one is better. The details are just sharper and the quality is just ....better.
But I can’t argue with you about the price. The ssc one was 130 quid new and this one was double.
If you have the ssc you won’t be sad but this hobby is all about personal mileage and degrees of happiness

He’s just fractionally too short - not noticeable in person but when compared to images from the film. He is.

I really like my Sideshow R2, but to me it still looks like something that cost about 100 bucks less than the HT R2. And even after a bit of modding it's just not at the level I really want for this character, and can't shake that overly plastic look it has.

That "basic option you want was The Force Awakens R2D2.

I really really wish this came with the full Obi-Wan Hut Table for this price. That?s probably my only complaint about it (besides the high price, but I guess it makes sense).

Got my R2 today. I bought him for $260 shipped on ebay from China. I got $135 for my Sideshow R2 so an upgrade only cost me $125 which I'm very happy with.

As I'm in Ireland if I had bought direct from Sideshow the total would have been about $350 including shipping and import fees.

Good financial discussion.... but how is the figure?

He's good. Dome feels nice and solid. The sounds work fine and the lights are nice and bright. I didn't have my Sideshow R2 to compare him to but he seems bigger in hand.

The dome has an uneven weathering pattern application, as in its weathered a lot heavier on one side than the other, which looks a little odd to me.

The Leias look good but will probably never be used and the sames applies to most if not all of the attachments.

Haven?t seen too many pics of this yet? I wonder if he?s not too popular, as the ss has been around for years and is adequate. I know he hasn?t shipped from ss yet, but still... Plus the price! I will pick it up with $90 is rewards because I?m a sucker who has to have the slightly better upgraded doll.

You can't have too many of 1/6 R2 if you have a decent sized SW collection. He is probably the most versatile character of any film franchise.
