I think you're the only one that sees the undersized eye, at least the only person that's mentioned here as far as I know. I'm not sure if you display your figs under lights but the HT dome, even the TFA one, instantly pops out under lights compared with the SS. And especially if you have it next to the Tama, that makes a big difference.

The SS was perfectly fine and I do miss the drink tray. I tried keeping it but it didn't really fit on the HT.

Yeah, I haven't got the HT under display lighting yet, just natural daylight next to my desk. As I mentioned, it looks a bit like grey paint with a high gloss clear coat under that type of flat lighting (the metallic reflectiveness kind of reading as just high gloss clear) but with spotlights on it, it really comes alive.

And I think the "eye" was a an issue for me because it's part of R2's main "face," though a minor/nit-picky issue for sure. It obviously wouldn't be noticeable to the casual fan or bug even people somewhat in the know. I assume it had to do with the functionality of how thin they could cast the metal in that area.

Bottom line is that people don't seem to put R2's details (or other non-human/droid/alien details for that matter) under the microscope as much as human face details, where you'll see people debating eyebrows.:lol I mean the SSC 3PO face was WAY off to me sculpt-wise, but many people seemed perfectly fine with it. For me, I have two, and fixed one and plan to fix the other (though that's going to be the white Hoth droid K3PO.)

I was perfectly happy with my copy of the SSC R2 ... some were better than others as the weathering and the seam in the dome were variable.

But I agree with the Freaks who think the HT is a substantial upgrade: paint, materials, proportions and details add up to a lot.

I don?t see the ?eye? issue Talibane sees, for which I?m thankful:lol

I decided to contact Popcultcha regarding an exchange of my R2 due to his bent foot. A $400 AUD figure should be free from such a QC issue. Unfortunately, their response was “this minor manufacturing variance does not deem a replacement unit.”

Well, just so I know I'm not being gaslighted... :lol and yes, I know it's picky (no more picky than the foot thing though) but I noticed it because it's part of his face. It's the "eye" that turns red periodically in the movie. Arrow pointing to it here...

I really don't see the problem.

Yeah, the foot thing is super picky - unless someone gets a much more noticeable one, it seems to vary. Seems like they all have it to some degree though.

I even noticed my SSC R2 has the feet really slightly tilted inward, but had never noticed it before. I think it's just the way it is with these type of ankle joints.

This new Hot Toys R2-D2 is definitely a step up from the Sideshow version. I'll be keeping both, but am glad I have the HT version to go with the other HT figures from A New Hope. Here's hoping HT hurry up and announce a new C-3PO!

The foot thing does seem a non-issue. As already pointed out you even see it in some scenes of the movie. I don't think anyone discussing a return would have even seen it had it not been pointed out here.

Review soon?

Had to make do for now with your 2019 collection catch-up video. Pretty awesome collection overall.

Glad someone else noticed/feels the same way as I did. When everyone was praising the HT TFA R2, I always felt that the light up circle was too small on the HT, like you said and have shown, and I never liked the weathering. To me it looks more like rust than dirt on the TFA figure.

I still want to pick this up just due to all the display possibilities, and the more accurate paint. But something about the SS I still like as well. I have the SS R2 ex and figured I'd just use the tray and put him with my original SS Jabba. The light up table is also much nicer that came with the SS. Hopefully he hangs around for awhile so I can use a coupon and maybe some RP's to help with the price, which I still feel is a little on the high side.

Has it been shipping from Sideshow yet? I got a coupon that expires in a week that I might want to burn on this but need to wait for it to go to 'in stock' status.

Here's my look at the new Hot Toys R2-D2 and comparison against the Sideshow R2-D2. A nice improvement overall that looks great with the other HT figures.

Nice review, thank you.

Too bad the HT camera eye doesn't move like the Sideshow one does.

I wonder if I could pop the SS eye out and set it into the HT? Looks like the same molds/sizes in many places.

This R2 should be a no-brainer acquisition for me and yet I feel no rush to get it.

It looks great, has all of the accessories I could want, looks better than the SSC version in all pics and yet I hesitate to order it.

I think the bottom line is that I'm getting really tired of the constant upgrading of figures. Maybe I'm just losing some interest in the hobby in general because of this.

I understand that its our lot in life, when it comes to this hobby, to keep upgrading but my heart and wallet are getting to the point that it may no longer be worth it to me.

Sorry for the Debbie-Downer post. I just rather put the funds towards a new figure than yet another upgrade.

But you are upgrading your Ledger Joker.

Admit it -- you're tired of Star Wars.

I'm getting tired of Hot Toys. Even the Big Boys like "Justin" seem to shift their focus on Third Party. If its a business relation or not I don't know where Justin puts all those figures. And how much is too much!! Still enjoy his reviews.
