I want to weather some Sam and Frodo cloths into Mt Doom versions.

The first step I want to do before dirtying them is fade.

Whats the best way to do this? Washing them? Bleach or color remover? Leaving them in the sun?

I am worried about washing or bleach because I don't want to damage the actual fabric or make it fray.

Thanks!

Rit makes a color remover but I'm not sure how to get gradations. Probably just need to dip them in it for a couple seconds and wash. You could also use watered-down raw sienna and paint directly over top.

I have never had good luck with the Rit color remover (unless your removing Rit dye) and bleaching can be a risky proposition considering your not likely to have spares lying around. The watered down paint method would probably work best. If I was trying to fade or lighten something I would use some watered down white.

I've had limited success with RIT color remover. I used half the recomended dose and 3/4 the time and it took the edge off of some black pants and turned a brown Hot Toys T-shirt sort of a hazel brown-gray.
