We have been buying a lot more from Ikea recently. We like the prices and the items we bring home.

I like to hear pros and cons of items I'm thinking about, and how well some things work in a space, what they are used for, etc.
I know a ton of us own Bestas, Detolfs, etc. We also own the expedit shelving and a dresser, bed and so on and so forth. I love the little things too, like the Droppar jars and other hanging shelves.
I've also heard some negative things about Ikea's shelving, and that it's not all that great. But my experience thus far has been really great.

Is there anything anyone recommends for a home, and is there anything you would stay away from? You know, for future reference.

I have had experience with their Detolf, LACK and Besta product. Imo Besta is their best quality product. It all depends what you're after, for example I have a couple besta shelves for my t.v./DVD setup.

Years ago I had some issues with the Expedit warping with heavy books.
No issues with anything recent, though (<5yrs).

Also, I'm not sure if you're familiar with it or not, but you may want to check out the IKEA Hackers site when you get a chance -

https://www.ikeahackers.net/

People post their "hacks", improvement projects and mods to existing IKEA merchandise.
Cool site if you like everything that is IKEA! :)

i wish i lived 20 minutes from an ikea. i can never get the ambition to drive a 4 hour round trip to pick up shelves. it's a shame cuz there is no good substitue for a cheap shelving around here. i hate walmart/target furniture.

I've been wanting to, but I just haven't made it there

They are opening one next month here. I heard some of their stuff is good and some of it is no better quality than furniture from walmart.

I love it! That said it is cheap walmart type of items for the most part. Just slightly better quality and far better instructions on how to put it together. Can't wait to go back! The style is also better than walmart. At the end of the day though it's all cheap particle board stuff. Which personally I'm fine with.

That's about what I would have to do. None close to me either.

l hate IKea. they make you walk in the direction of those stupid arrows. no one tells me what direction to walk in.:lol the stuff l buy there is right at the begining. and they expect me to walk all the way through their maze. screw that. l walk where ever l want at ikea. l walk against the arrows when i'm browsing around. once l find what l want l walk the wrong way sometimes to the check out. l get alot of dirty looks when l go there.:lol

I do dislike the maze that is ikea. But I just love a lot that they offer. Especially for the kitchen. I love having kitchen stuff and when I go in there I'm like a kid in a candy store.

Craw, where do you live?

For those who are worried about the shelving being cheap, I will tell you this. I had walmart shelves and 1 pf was making the shelf bow at some point. I had 3pf's on one besta shelf and I had no issues. I think their besta is very good quality and the price is very reasonable. Besides, you get what you pay for.

Yeah, I love the Besta media bookcases... I've got two filled so far with DVDs & BDs, but I need something like 2 or 3 more to hold everything still in boxes! :slap What I really like about them is that you can buy extra shelves, and place them at exactly the height you need. So in one bookcase, I make a shelf of BDs and can place the next shelf at a closer distance instead of being forced to waste space with pre-positioned shelves.

I haven't bought anything Ikea related products for my collecting yet. But I did bought a 2-part desk with lamp and book selves to attach. Sure its composite wood from the interior but the lamination are top notch. There's a couple of small area where the lamination joint show some wear but not much noticeable and not bad at all. I had it for a solid 10yrs now. And I am sure it'll last another 10yrs without a problem.
