"Within 30 minutes of consuming a small amount of a xylitol-sweetened product, the ASPCA says, dogs can experience a dramatic drop in blood sugar, and they usually begin vomiting, become lethargic and can have difficulty standing or walking. Some have seizures, develop internal hemorrhaging and lesions and suffer liver failure. As few as two or three sticks of xylitol gum could be toxic to a 20-pound dog, the ASPCA says."

Don't give it to your cats either.

Kids can take it though... those little bastards are hard to kill. :lol

my jack russle gets into sooo much crap. he ate a whole bottle of my other dogs arthritis medicine. luckily it was not toxic. he also ate 1/2 a lemon pudding cake. needless to he was sick for a few days after that. he also ate one of those 5" x 8" type Hershey bar. lucky it was milk and not dark chocolate. he is a little ^^^^. i'll watch out for this gum because yeah once he ate a pack.

My unlce's dog had these symptoms a few weeks ago. The vet couldn't tell what it was. A day or two later, the dog was fine again. So I guess maybe he ate a piece of gum or something from the ground...

Thanks for posting Rory, did not know this, although I don't see myself giving my pups candy or mints anytime soon.

I think everyone knows chocolate is very toxic for dogs, the darker the worse, causes renal/liver/kidney failure, but I didn't know till just a few months ago that grapes are also very bad for dogs. I would always throw my dogs a couple of grapes if I were eating them, don't do that anymore.

Hibiscus flowers are also poisonous if you have any in your yard and your dog eats any of the fallen petals.

dont let them eat onions either..............we almost lost one of our dogs to this. i never would have guessed that in a million years. so i did a bit of research of what can be posinous to dogs and there are tons of things. needless to say i had to thin my garden down. but i can see this varying from dog to dog as well because my other dog ate some onion too and it never affected her..............:dunno

Raisins and grapes are a no, no for cats as well. Along with a TON of other things.

I thought dogs loved ^^^^^?

No that's me.

Interesting that this stuff is found in tons of food for diabetics. I have a buddy who is diabetic and buys the speciality stuff, and always feed him table scraps. I'll have to forward this article to him.

I didn't know this and thanks so much for posting it.

Two months ago, I lost my first dog to something very similar to this, symptom wise. He was sick just like this for about a week, then rallied, and then was affected again. The vet said it was some type of liver malfunction, likely caused by the dog eating something it should not have from the ground. The loss was pretty devastating to me because for the last few days of his life, he was not eating and extremely lethargic. He was only just approaching ten years old, and I expected him to go on for quite a few more. Then, as I left for an extremely rare trip away from home, I felt like I should not pet him, or disturb him as he rested on the floor. I was leaving for the airport very early in the morning. But I felt like if I made a big deal out of leaving, it would upset him, and I was already feeling like I might not see him again. Of course, two days into my trip, I got the call that he was gone. Pretty devastating really.

He was survived by his baby sister, who is now playing the role of big sister to the new arrival. I guess its pretty common, but I never expected I would be one of the people who would almost rush out and get a new puppy. What was I thinking. But seriously, she is a great puppy. But I definitely miss my Kuma San.

:(
