If you're talking about the backdrop, I'm pretty sure that was just their setup for that time.

If you're talking about his boots, that looks more like a light reflection to me.

I don't know if it's supposed to be actually snow or lot but often on volcanic planets the snow-like stuff is ash. Volcanic ash can be incredibly snow-like, usually grey though.

It's incredible to think that in 45 years or so, that Darth Vader is still one of the most amazing and impressive pieces of design ever created.
