Well...is it? A year or two ago I was looking forward to a game almost every month March-May and Sept - Dec. But I haven't bought a game since October (New Vegas), and don't have an interest in one until LA Noire. So where are all the games?

I used to be in this section of the thread all the time, but now I feel like I have no need to pop in for discussion cause there is nothing to talk about.

Thoughts?

Not dead, but dominated. Dominated by a few large companies. when you have a monopoly you're not as pressed to put out large numbers of games. You want to sell as many copies of the current stuff before developing more.

The game industry is pretty much owned by a few large developers.

There are a couple games out I'm dying to play, and a few on my radar.

Dead Space 2
Bullet Storm
LA Noire
Arkham City
Infamous 2
Uncharted 3

The "lack of good releases" is subjective, all depends on your gaming preferences!

I'm so behind in gaming that they could not release something for 3 years for the PS3 and I might not notice. :lol

Same Prog, I've gone from ~6 hours a day to ~4 hours a month (if I'm lucky) over the last few years :(

I still game plenty and there has been a large number of cool games over the last several months that came out with more coming. Its all what you're into I think if you feel thinks aren't "hot".

One thing is for certain, new releases of music games will definately be slowing down. :lol

Haven't played a GH or RB in sooooooo long and I think that goes for almost everyone.

I personally believe games and expectations are getting so high there has been a big push to up the quality which is uping development times so we're not seeing as many games as often. It's become more of a quality vs. quantity industry which I believe is a good thing. I'd rather have a few great games in a year than one for every month that's just pretty good.

I concur. I'd rather have a super high quality game once in a while than sub-par new games every 2 weeks. Besides, I'm getting old and don't have the time to dedicate to multiple games at a time.

I ask because according to your list ME3, Elder Scrolls, and Ghost Recon are the only ones on my radar, and they don't even come out till the holiday's (or beyond in GR's case) Plus up until about November I would of considered myself a hardcore gamer spending the majority of my free time playing, but my xbox hasn't even been plugged in since Christmas.

Was just asking if anyone else has seen a lull in gaming.

I was just reading Kotaku's featured article "Game Industry Dead After It Was Discovered that Nuka Cola Kidd Hasn't Bought A Game Since October" and was gonna post about it, but I figured it would fit better in this thread.

Too bad Nuka Cola Kidd and I don't have similar tastes, the industry could've been saved if only he bought the games I bought. :monkey2

1st and 2nd yearly quarters are usually slow for the games industry. They've taken it upon themselves to put out a lot more games in the Winter and Spring months of the last couple of years, but generally the gaming industry doesn't explode until about Autumn. That's how it is.

I can only speak for myself, but I find that a gamer who has broad tastes usually does not have any trouble finding new games to play at any point in a year.

If merely ME3, Elder Scrolls, and Ghost Recon are the only games in that 2011 list I posted above that you are interested in, then you are in no position to ask if the industry is dead. What I just said may be harsh, but I feel that it's fitting.

the industry is starting to go in two directions actually. one is huge developers who push out cookie-cutter games, as well as latching onto whatever indie trend seems to be cool and cathing on.

then there are the independent studios who are trying to get a start, and get noticed, who, inevitably get swallowed up by the bigger studios when they finally strike gold.
and then are replaced by newer indie studios, and the cycle continues.

I think the game industry as we know it is dying very fast. Once developers wrinkle all of the kinks out of DLC and online gaming, I think we will see less and less 'new' releases; expansion type games and games that require codes to progress will become more abundant. Just look at the last few RPG games, DCU, and even MvC is released and a few weeks later they are pushing the DLC for extra $$$.

Producers hate it when customers have a "complete" game in hand that can be passed aroud or resold multiple times. Hell, I almost never buy a game outside of a fighting game because my $17 a month Blockbuster account lets me have a movie and game out at the same time for as long as I want = rent, beat, return, repeat...

One would think it was dead if their last purchase was New Vegas, it should have been called 'Old ____', the game was essentially a rehash of Fallout 3 which already felt dated, and was broken before even shipping.

Killzone 3, MvC3, and LBP 2 have already launched with huge sequels like: Portal 2, Crysis 2, Resistance 3, Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3, Uncharted 3, Arkham City, new MK, and original ones like, L.A. Noire, Rage, The Last Guardian, Brink, and I'm just pulling these from the top of my head.

If that doesn't get you excited than it's not the game industry, it's yourself.

Anyones desire to play games would be killed after New Vegas.
