I ordered a Mines of Moria on ebay, the quality in some areas seems to be lacking when compared to my cherished sideshow Minas Tirith. I was wondering if anyone who ordered the MoM directly from sideshow could compare the pictures i have attached to theirs and let me know if things look wrong.

There are a couple things that stand out:

1) Comparing the first two photos, the second, has carving that does not match the same profile as the sideshow pic. I don't know if this is important...maybe all units differ, but the depth of the carving is more pronounced on the sideshow unit. I tried to replicate lighting placement to have good comparison, but there seems big difference to me.

Second two photos of a different area. In my unit, the worn columns to the right of the doorway look like irregular rectangles just scattered, whereas the sideshow piece has columns in an orderly manner, each with similar details, but the upper portions worn in different ways. Just as you would expect something that was magnificent at one time, and has been worn by time.

2) Last pic shows detailing of the inner full columns. Additionally you can clearly see yellow dots. These dots are all over my figure, which you can also see in the 4th picture. Are these dots normal? I dont see this on any of the pictures on sideshow site.

I hope someone has an idea on how to prove if this is a fake or not. I got it yesterday and have 7 days to return it. If its a fake, i want to get the seller off the ebay streets asap. Many Thanks, LM.

PS. I can take any more comparison pics if it helps us prove its validity.

Looks legit to me. This was one of the best enviros of the line IMO. Love that sequence of the film

Has this guy sold other pieces and what is his feedback? Also, did it come in the original box? Maybe you can forward the pics to Sideshow and see what they think?

Looks spot on to the piece that I have on my desk here and purchased direct from Sideshow Weta in those storied days of old. ;) Survey saaaaays - real! :D

Looks real to me as well. One of sideshows best dios.

+1 from me on both counts!

And, Bodie is right, no-one is going to spend all the time, effort and money faking this piece for the relatively small sums it brings back...just enjoy the piece :)

For the size of it, the details are great. It has all the parts from the final moments of Moria - the door opening out where Boromir nearly falls over, the stairs that get hit by falling boulders, the hall where the balrog appears, the bridge, and the escape route right to the door where the fellowship exit. It even has the shelf where Legolas shoots some moria orcs!
Any bigger and the details would have been even better, but the price would be far too much, and heavy too. Great piece! :D

Looks just like the one I bought last week for $30....I hope I didn't get a forgery. :monkey3 :lol

The seller has a very good profile on ebay, something like 14000 reviews with 98% positive. I looked at recent buyer reviews from this person and they were all positive. The seller has sold at least 4 of these pieces, including mine, over the last couple months. They are being sold for about $90 each. He currently has 2 more for sale now:

The box and packaging looked very authentic. One thing i was wondering was how this guy was selling so many of these and taking a loss since each one from sideshow would have cost him $200.

It appears that from most comments that its real. And thanks everyone for helping me with this. But two things still bother me:

I assume everyone also has the red and yellow dots scattered all over this. I personally dont like the dots, and you cant see them anywhere on the sideshow pics.

Also when comparing the MoM to the Minas Tirith, I see lots more detal in the Tirith piece. I wish the MoM was sculpted with as much care. For those of you who own both pieces, do you feel the same way?

I still love the MoM part in the movie....

Thanks,

Meh, the Minas Tirith is what it is, a dvd collectible. You need the Danbury Mint Minas Tirith, now THAT will knock you out! :horror

I would rather Weta did small parts from Moria, like having the Dwarrodelf and the bridge as seperate pieces, so the whole thing was better to display and didn't look like an ant-hill, but i like it nonetheless.

I would be shocked if he bought them for $200 each (which of coarse would NOT have been the wholesale price!) and just left them to fester on his shelf for the past 4-5 years :lol More likely is that he bought them, in bulk, from a store or online sale and is selling them off for a small profit :)

Yes, I just checked and mine also has the small dots on them (though I had to get worryinging close to see them :lol)

Honestyly, I would say you are worrying too much about this, just sit back and enjoy the piece :peace

Im not worried about it anymore. Pretty good consensus that it is real. I just dont think it looks like the original sideshow pics. Especially in the area to the right of the archway where the 4 half destroyed columns are. I thought i was paying for something that looked exactly like the sideshow pics, but I certainly didnt get it here. Maybe the one in the pics is was actually carved by Mary, the original sculpter. Now if i could get that one, serial number 1, then i would be happy.:banana

But it looks like some chinese sculpters just rushed thru this. I love the details in the enviros, and thats what i want...i really like my Minas Tirith piece and i got that free with the DVD!!!

I know this is off topic, but I kinda wondered how these are produced? My guess is that most of it is cast, then the sculpers start going crazy with an exacto knife.

You are so correct, i looked at some pics online and the DM Minas is quite impressive. Do the pictures I have seen online match the one you have?

I am really really REALLY looking forward to Rivendell. But it is such a large city, i hope the break it up into many pieces like you are suggesting. This way they can keep the detail sharp!
