Re: The Man of Steel

I think what needs to be pointed out here (now that I can actually speak up) is that this film is not at all meant to embody the entirety of the Superman/Clark Kent character. He's still a neophyte, he's still green, and he's still learning and adapting.

As Zack said during production, if this new universe of DC films were comics, this wouldn't even be Issue #1... it's Issue 0. It's setting the stage for stuff even bigger.

Re: The Man of Steel

Yep... and there's plenty of references to him starting to get a grip on his reality, abilities, history and destiny... and all of the sudden, bam!! Gotta save the world...

Re: The Man of Steel

But come on, the military? They are gonna be all over him.

Not really. They'd have their own ulterior motives for playing along with Supes. Are you familiar with the comics, or stuff like The New Frontier or Justice League Unlimited? Good starting point to figure out where they're gonna go with this.

Re: The Man of Steel

I think the only way they could top the damage in this one is to kill Superman at the end of the next one and have an Empire Strikes back ending that carries into the 3rd. Trouble is that'd mean a recycled villain in both since whoever kills him would be back for the rematch in 3. They could give it a Rocky/Rocky 2 feel.

Re: The Man of Steel

Darkseid is the obvious choice (including Justice League). The problem is THE AVENGERS is already using his rip-off (Thanos) and citizen dumb would see it as the other way around if WB uses Darkseid after.

Re: The Man of Steel

I feel there was far more sophistication to MoS/TDK Trilogy vs. anything Marvel has done. Marvel's stuff has a bit more appeal to kids I think, which MoS/TDK deep down are intended for older audiences. But thats just my opinion. Others I know probably feel opposite.l

Just to clarify, when you say Marvel do you mean all Marvel or just Marvel studios? :wave

What about Doomsday? It'd suffer the audience another straight-up brawl for the next couple flicks, but that'd give Deckard his two-fer. And given the Kryptonian plot here, it sets up a good opportunity for him.

Re: The Man of Steel

No I think Luthor needs to come in in the next.

I agree with this actually.. I felt that it just felt like one gigantic set up for other films... It could IMO be made a better film by a great sequel.

As is, it somehow felt incomplete.

Re: The Man of Steel

I don't get it...I thought it was great! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole film...I don't understand the critics' reactions...of course I never listen to critics anyway. Great start to a new Superman franchise...also loved the nods to Wayne Enterprises and Lexcorp.

Naw, bwing on Bwainiac.

No I think Luthor needs to come in in the next.

Combine all these ideas: Lex is mysteriously given Krypton tech. He can't control Superman, so he will clone him. Clone isn't right. At first it looks like Superman, then morphs to a Bizarro like creature. Then devolves into Doomsday. It can't be stopped Superman dies in the fight against it. Lex has not time to celebrate as Braniac(his benefactor) shows up and invades. Planning to bottle Earth's greatest cities(Metropolis and Gotham) Superman is Dead, and we are ill equipped to oppose him. That's your Superman Sequel. Justice League begins with batman recruiting Flash to help defend the earth. the Guardians send Hal back to Earth to see what's going on. Diana leaves Themyscira because she believes staying on the sideline this time is a bad idea. At Superman eventually comes back from the dead to defeat Brainiac. The league fights his legion of robots, save the day and there is now a JL. Even tease them Amanda Waller is not happy about all of them coming together. Considering the threat they could pose if they turned.

This is a very rough sketch.

Re: The Man of Steel

^ ideas for the sequel should probably go in that thread. :wink1:

Cool! There are lots of us who love it. I don't agree with any points trying to be made why they didn't like it. But everyone is 100% totally entitled to his/her opinions...What I like isn't going to be what everyone else likes.

I think there was a lot of sophistication and high attention to details in the film. And its a comic book movie, its supposed to be fun and exciting, but If you didn't connect with it, oh well, what can you do?

I loved all the flashbacks. I thought they were perfection!!! And you know as much as I love Avengers, i just never thought at any time there was a real threat happening in the film. With MoS, like the Dark Knight trilogy, there is a lot of danger happening and you really didn't know who would survive and how. If feel there was far more sophistication to MoS/TDK Trilogy vs. anything Marvel has done. Marvel's stuff has a bit more appeal to kids I think, which MoS/TDK deep down are intended for older audiences. But thats just my opinion. Others I know probably feel opposite.

IM3...I hate that movie!!! to me was one of the worst of the newer comic book films up there with Wolverine, Green Lantern and first 3 Spiderman's. Loved IM 1 and 2 far far better. IM3 was like a slap stick comedy. Felt like i was watching Mr. Bean or something...just hated every second of it....LoL. :lol

But i think more than anything you just have to see movies for yourself and judge for yourself, who cares what others think, right? :lol

Do you think it provides that sense of character motivation that a good story driven movie often provides?

Opinions are all over with this one.

I like CBM's that have good action that is done not just for the wow factor but to backup the story and a story that movitates the characters and develops them so they evolve from who they were at the beginning to who they change to at the end.

Think it delivers something like that?

Re: The Man of Steel

Well, I honestly don't know what to make of this film. I'm not sorry I saw it, but I can't really say I walked out of theater feeling much of anything either.

Everyone was fine in their respective roles, but no one really excelled except for the actress playing Faora, she was a great baddie. My eyes were glued to her anytime she was onscreen. Cavill I actually found to be rather flat and lifeless. Apart from the occasional Goku scream, I didn't get much emotional investment from him at all. Would've like to have seen more of Costner.

The action sequences are everything they were hyped up to be, but it does become monotonous after a while, basically descending into "SUPERMAN SMAAAAASH!" Special effects were outstanding. The Krypton stuff was especially cool, it had a 50's sci-fi Flash Gordon feel.

It's not a bad way to kill two hours is about all I can say for now.

Re: The Man of Steel

Just got back from MoS & really enjoyed it. I thought Cavill made a really good Superman. I don't want to say to much about it but I definitely recommend it, Superman fans shouldn't be disappointed.

There was clapping at the end from the audience. Something I've never witnessed before in a British cinema
