UPDATE: wow, what a difference four years of painting heads makes! I have repainted this guy once again! Scroll to the end for how he looks now.

I thought I'd post this here as this is where everyone goes for all the Predator customs/repaints. 2013 update: I think a new area has been created since 2009 so if any mod wants to move this.... That'd be great.

First I owe a shout out to P!tu for the solid quill insertion how-to video! Les gets a shout out for giving me the inspiration by posting the gorgeous work he did on his Elder head -- and for posting the reference photo of the actual film prop!

And for that matter I owe a shout out all customizers who are brave enough to post their work on this board for all to see!

I was having some writer's block in Feb. and got some paint at the back-to-school sale at the art supply store and started futzing on the discoloration around the quills. Before I knew it I had repainted everything but the dreads!

He could use about 10 or so quills for his chinny-chin-chin but whatever. That was a case of not having a way to make the beard look good when I planned them all out and only later figuring out to make them work. Too late.

He's my first repainted figure and I wasn't sure if he'd look okay at the end of it. I hope people likes him.

NOTE: It was easier painting this guy than it was to photograph him!

The tattoos on the cheeks were a bugger to make natural!

And here's my 2.0 -- the repaint, repainted

good work mate:google... i'm i wish i had this predator so i could do the same thing. maybe it's me but the paint looks really shiny on the head? but overall nice app:gun

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

Thanks guys!

The shine is more a product of my photography skill. To match the more recent preds, I coated the forehead semi-gloss and his mouth, teeth and eyes in gloss. But I can't seem to light him without either draining the color from his face or creating that glare.

But now that you mention it, maybe I should give a coat of matte finish to his forehead to dull the semi-gloss enough to give his mouth, teeth and eyes more of a distinction.

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

that looks so kickass the face is even better then in the movie
work of art :bow

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

That looks fantastic, so much better than the paint job it came with. Always thought the early preds looked quite cartoonish with their paint jobs

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

Yeah, the early preds -- hell all the Hot Toys that came out a few years ago -- pale next to their current Hot Toys figures. When I was working out what to do with the Elder all I had in mind was trying to get him to fit in with the recent pred releases. Since he doesn't have a mask he can wear, his factory paint aps made him stand out when displayed together -- and not in a good way.

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

when applying the quills is there any holes already in his head to guide you or is it a random thing? i'm asking this because i'm thinking of getting one.

There are indentations of where the quills should go, however; you have to puncture the head yourself.

LOL...that sounded weird.

yeah mate... i'm waiting for a good deal atm... seems like the prices are some where at the $350 mark...

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

No holes. There are dimples that suggest placement but there are way more quills than dimples, as I recall.

I had the worst time gluing them on as they kept flaking off. In the end I used this method: I used a hobby drill to create a hole. Then I secured a quill in the teeth of a needle nose pliers, dipped it in glue. Then reinsert the drill into the hole -- as the plastic will "relax" a bit, shrinking the hole -- and then wiggle the drill a bit to reopen it. And then I insert the quill. I watched a season of HBO's Entourage on DVD while doing it.

There's a how-to youtube video using a nail that's been heated by a flame that stays in the hole until until the quill is ready, but I recommend a hobby drill. :)

If you get one and have extra quills, think of me. :monkey1

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

should i use all of the quills? or is there no need to use at much. btw how many quills do you get?

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

You get a good amount, but I never counted. If you look at my Pred I used all except for about a dozen or so that got lost. There's 2 sizes, long and medium. To get the shorter quills, you need to cut them -- and they like to jump when cut so be careful. There's no need to use all of them as it's a matter of taste. I always thought that more was better than less which is why I didn't have any left over when I finally figured out how to do his chin. While it would make sense for Hot Toys to include instructions or a map of where to place them, they didn't.

Re: My AvP Elder repaint

Thanks gbd for the good advice. I will remember you when I have some left over quills

So not quite four years later and I decided to revisit this guy. New pics in the initial post.

Oh, and since this thread predates the Action Figure side of things, if any helpful mod out there could move it over? :wink1:

:thud: wow, amazing work, you really nailed the paint, please share this with hot toys so they will get this guy right when they redo it. Best looking hot toys avp elder I have seen, thanks for sharing :clap
