So, after countless hour pouring through all the custom dioramas here and getting inspired, I decided to give it a go... Wanted to build a simple dio based on a regular street on Tatooine or Jedha (or just about any sandy planet).

Started with a design I created on Sketchup, just to give me some idea of measurement and scale.

Then had to find some time in between family and work to start the project. Made it out of a 300mm x 400mm MDF board as a base and recycled cardboard and tape/hot glue gun/pva glue to piece it all together.

This is the rough build up of the wall...

I then added more details and reinforcement to the structure. Some test shot for scale...

That was as much as I could do over the 2 day holiday we had over here. Basic structure done. Looks a bit patchy but its my first build and I'm making things up along the way... lol!

Next step is to cover the whole structure with some materials to get a sand dune texture. Was thinking of using watered down spakfilla as I've seen Hemble use it with great effect and he's been a great help and inspiration for my build. Would love to hear any comments or tips that can help me along with the build.

Will keep this post updated with any progress I make...

Thanks for viewing!

Looking superb so far. Want to try my hand at this myself once my Anovos Stormie suits are built.

Nice design. Sometimes the hardest part when making dios is just getting started... and you have a great start! Looking forward to the finish!

Some updates on the progress of the diorama. Found some time during the long holiday weekend to work on the dio...

Taped up all the surface and prep it for some spakfilla application. Also manage to build the basic door structure. May want to put more details on the door and bare walls. Still looking for ideas...

Also found some time to clean up the back portion and cover up all the ugly support cardboard structure. Both panels can still be opened as I'm contemplating installing some LEDs...

Added some details to the door frame using corrugated plastic board. Had to painstakingly cut out alternate strips, but hopefully it was well worth it. Also used some 3D printed parts I had done previously for an abandoned diorama project (props for anyone who can guess what that was for! :wink1: )

Better view of the other 3D printed part. Placed it lower so an R2 unit can access it to open the door...

So, that's it so far. Still want to add more details, maybe do some LEDs before plastering the whole model up and painting. Wish me luck!

Looking great! What are you going to cover the cardboard with? Maybe like a textured spray paint or something for a stuko look?

Thanks!

I'm planning to use watered down spakfilla mixed with sand for the floor and just watered down spakfilla for the walls... Cheap and cheerful! :)
