haven't seen anyone post this yet.

looks like ssc has finally tried to address the site crashing during PPO's and other high volume ordering times.

Faster Than Dial-Up...Faster Than...Well Its Just Really Fast Now!

Sideshow Collectibles has been expanding its family of licenses over the past few years, and with it we have welcomed a pack of Sideshow Collectors to our ever growing, pool of cool. All the new excitement and traffic has added a few ripples of slowness for collectors during event times and newsletter night. Thus we have added two new massive, technically stellar servers, named Ripley and Thing, to help speed things along! (Please note that Ripley and Thing, although magical, can't improve your local access speed from your house to the internet.)

guess we'll see if it helps the next big marvel announcement.

now i'm not a computer geek, but do they just add two new servers to the existing servers, or woyuld they completely remove the old servers and replace them with ripley and thing.

Nash, your avatar and sig are clean... yet elegant... much like you my clean and elegant Asian friend... not like that dirty tacky Pixletwin or that even dirtier greaser P!tu.

well my winnipeggian brother, anyone who uses an exclamation point for an i is bound to be greasy. :lol

Nash is Asian? I always pictured him as looking either like Iron Man or that chick in his avatar currently. :lol

Edit: lol. I guess that would mean I look like a Stormtrooper's codpiece.

* retracts statement * :lol

Complete replacement is the only way to go. Otherwise you could add more processors and memory to an existing server. From the SS statement is sounds like they did a complete replacement which is heading in the right direction!

Skiman beat me to it but yeah....replacement is what they would do...out with the old (useless and slow POS!!) in with the New!!

Based on their statement, I think they added them, not replaced two. They probably have a server farm for their website, and the more servers you add, the better able it is to handle traffic.

Yeah I guess it depends on what kind of structure it is though, since you could have a server running the web request and then have another host do all the batch processing mainly the number crunching whenever a servlet sends the response or request over.

It could be a small few servers running the shop as well, not saying that it is but I have seen it and the preformance is horrible. Sideshow being as big of a company I would agree with the farm statement.

Since working in IT and being software/programmer systems guy, we have a 3 tier server environment here handling batch data processing, the SQL server database and then another host handling the web request. (just for the dept I'm in, not the whole company though)

Ah but Sideshow really isn't that "big" of a company; they would be considered in the small to medium class I'm sure. From what I've seen and read, I believe they probably have less than 100 employees and probably have annual grosses in the millions, not billions...

Hmmm... then I guess it could fall into my middle statement there... Yeah hopefully Thing or Ripley are beasts and maybe just a guess here but maybe one of them is a new web server sending the request faster and the other being the data crunching guy can crank/submit orders in faster to deliver the performance we've been hoping to see...

Guess time will tell :lol
