Today's question: What is the biggest Oscars "Best Picture" upset of all time. Check out our poll to cast your vote from our five options, or comment below to tell us we're full of it, or to campaign for any upsets we might have missed. Here are our choices:

1. "Forrest Gump" tops "The Shawshank Redemption." Now, we love a little revisionist history as much as the next guy, and Forrest was sweet enough, but we're pretty sure that "Shawshank" can withstand the test of time a little better.

2. "Rocky" tops "All the President's Men," "Taxi Driver" and "Network." The underdog story rules, and "Rocky" has always been one of my favorites on the list of Best Picture winners, but taking out those three films in the same year is like knocking out Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago within the same 12 rounds.

3. "Ghandi" tops "E.T." The epic biopic was a classic, no doubt. But who among us can claim to have not been touched by E.T.'s little glowing heart, and his need to "phone home," and that bike ride across the moon, and ... oh, it's too much. Where's the Kleenex?

4. "Annie Hall" tops "Star Wars." What wins out? An epic that launched the most successful movie franchise of all time, or what was, really, another Woody Allen movie? The choice is clear, at least 30 years later.

5. "Shakespeare in Love" tops "Saving Private Ryan." Consider this our payback to Tom Hanks for dissing "Forrest Gump" earlier, but, at least in hindsight, "Shakespeare" turns out to be nothing more than a fun little joyride and borderline buffoonery. "Saving Private Ryan" reminded us of what an epic war movie is all about and should have followed in the tradition of "Platoon" and "Patton."

I voted for Saving Prvt Ryan...
The Right Stuff losing to Terms of Endearment in '83 was a joke as well.
Gump deserved to win but Redemption was good.
(....and E.T. sucked in retrospect)

Out of those choices I'd pick Saving Private Ryan. But I think the biggest upset is Ordinary People winning over Raging Bull.

#5 in my book. but then again i place no confidence in hollywood...at least to express my opinions.

Saving Private Ryan losing:emperor

I think Forrest Gump deserved to win just as much as Shawshank and Pulp Fiction, which was also nominated that year. E.T. is one of my all-time favorite movies and would pick it over Ghandi any time, but Ghandi is an epic story about one of the greatest icons in human history. They usually always win:D

#1 for me. I was soooo pissed that I threw the controller at the TV and walked out of the room. A retarded guy on a bench telling a stupid life story that could never happen in a million years, there's nothing entertaining about that. Oh how I despise Forrest Gump...

IMO, The worst has to be 1941, when HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY beat CITIZEN KANE as well as THE MALTESE FALCON.

Those are all bad (especially #1, #5 and 1941 as Lembas Eater astutely mentioned).

But how about 1997? "Titanic" beats out the much superior "L.A. Confidential" and "Good Will Hunting".

Also, another 1980 film much better than "Ordinary People" is "The Elephant Man".

:emperor The Academy (and 99% of Hollywood, for that matter).

I think the academy realized that despite fantastic filmmaking, the script for Private Ryan wasn't all that great whereas Shakespeare in Love was a much better written film.

Annie Hall over Star Wars - that was the first Oscar awards show I watched and I was so disappointed that Star Wars didn't win.

I'd say #4 and #5 are both equally as bad...

But my personal worst is The Chronicles of Narnia beating ROTS...

How did a talking beaver beat the battle of Coruscant?

That's why there's also an award for Best Original Screenplay, which SIL also won.

SPR is the better film, period. At least imho... but I know I'm far from alone.
