It’s been a bit of a long road for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master. The project was pretty much dead until Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures resurrected the film and provided the financing (thanks for that, Ms. Ellison!). In December, we heard that the film was likely to be released at near the end of the year. PTA fan site Cigarettes and Red Vines contacted Ellison about the release date, and she responded:

@cigsandredvines I know you guys are waiting on a release date for ‘the Master’, and it’s still a bit early, but I’d keep my eyes on October

For those unfamiliar with the movie, The Master (still a tentative title) centers on a man (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who’s so shaken by the horrors he witnessed in World War II that he decides to create a new religion. The film, shot in 65mm and scored by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood), also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky. In an earlier draft of the script, Hoffman’s character was clearly based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, but that basis may have been scaled back in the final film.

An October release date firmly sets the movie in the festival game, and I would be shocked if the film didn’t open at a major fall festival in order to start building buzz. But which festival? The likely contenders are Venice, Toronto, and possibly Fantastic Fest. Fantastic Fest is the most genre-oriented of the three, but that’s where There Will Be Blood made its world premiere. No matter where it lands, a release in October (or really any fall release date) could put the film in the awards game, and distributor The Weinstein Company loves them some awards. Personally, I’m just glad that we’ll get this sucker in 2012, especially since we came so close to never getting it at all.

Going to be great for sure. Really wish he would have kept it based more on the scientology tards just to watch half of Hollywood squirm. Really excited for Phoenix's return as well. Anderson pulls out the best from every actor he's ever worked with so this should be no different.

:lol:lol:lol:rotfl

It is the PTA/Hoffman partnership I am really looking forward to seeing.

Sounds fantastic anyways

Yeah Hoffman is great in support from his two other films with Anderson so with him taking the lead in this I'm expecting Plainview level ____. Ironically Day Lewis will beat him out at the Oscars for Lincoln.

Yeah absolutely.

I am sure your right that DDL will beat him to the Oscar. I love the irony that he was once Bill the Butcher and won the Oscar for that starring role and now he will go on to win the Oscar as Lincoln :lol

DDL didn't win for Gangs of New York. He lost to Adrien Brody.

:slap

Why did I think he won it for Bill. I could have swore I seen him in my mind going up to collect the Oscar in his tartan trousers :lol

Edit: It was the BAFTA he won for GONY. I knew I rememberd him going to collect an award in some horrendous tartan suit :lol

I seriously can't wait for this. I don't know why it takes Anderson so long to make his films. :impatient:

Btw, there needs to be a Criterion edition of There Will be Blood.

Don't you mean three.:monkey3

PTA + this cast is gonna be great but the trailers pretty meh. If I didn't already know the plot, I wouldn't want to run out and see it after that.

Yes not what I was expecting either. What happened to Hoffman? Didn't even make the teaser?

Of course it will be a must watch for me but I agree that trailer is underwhelming to say the least. Phoenix looks like he is well into his character however.

Loving the Jonny Greenwood score again. :rock

I said it on the first page, but I'll say it again. Anderson brings out the best of every actor he works with and Phoenix looks to keep that trend going. If you sign onto a PTA film you might as well start reserving some mantle space.

The problem is it just makes Pheonix look like a clueless drug addict which is dangerously close to how most people probably see him right now in real life. It doesn't give away any of the what he's searching for plot with Hoffman. Still looks good, and will likely be Pheonix's best performance just not a good trailer.

RM Dirk Diggler w/ prosthetic _____? :exactly:

Apart from Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia, which were overrated and tedious, I agree with you. Damn if I've ever seen a better Burt Reynolds performance than Boogie Nights :D

I liked this trailer, personally. It's obviously set up to makes you wanna see more, to figure out what the heck's going on, and it works in my case.
