Garage model kits?

What is a garage model kit? If you saw a really nice resin garage model kit would you buy it? Are garage kits numbered, or where do they come from? Can they appreciate in value? Thanks.

Re: Garage model kits?

originally garage kits were guys/gals that sculpted figures, molded them, and then cast them to sell in short runs. The term "garage kit" came because of the resin fumes were bad and you didn't want to make them in your house. They were unlicensed and really wasn't an issue because they were such small runs.

Re: Garage model kits?

Not heard that term for a very long time!!
I used to deal with garage kits back in the 90's, how times changed!!

What do you think of a garage model kit recast? Do you think that is a fake collectible and hurts real collectors? There is this one really awesome resin garage model kit I want.

So, let's think. A recast of a statue is not cool because the paint job is done by someone else e.g. some dude in China rather than a SideShow Collectible artist. But for garage model kits, everyone of the statues is painted by a different person. However, the final product was not pieced together from the original pieces that came with the kit. It was just a recast. So the only difference between a recast garage model kit and an original is how the actual statue was pieced together. Does that matter? I wouldn't think that it does. What do you think? Is it wrong to buy recast garage model kits?

I honestly wouldn't care about recast kits, but I know many are against it. Usually recasts are lesser queslity too. It does hurt the original manufacturers a bit though in the long run.

Didn't you just make a thread on this?

That's what I said :lol

I think in the other thread most people gave you their input about recasts so if this falls under that category I would pass.

That being said, if you really want this and will kick yourself for passing than by all means do what you have to do to be happy. I just wouldn't post here looking for support of that decision to make you feel better about it, might want to keep it to yourself :wink1:

No need to hate. If I knew you guys in real life I'd treat you well. This thread is slightly different because I am asking about recast garage model kits and your take on them.

No hating involved (or hard feelings for that matter), its just you should probably stick to one thread regarding your topics so you, A) don't get in trouble from mods, B) get chewed out by people who do hate :wave

Recasting has put several kit manufacturers out of business(Horizon, Geometrics and Screamin', to name a few). When you buy a recast, you are essentially helping the re-caster steal from the kit's original creators. Chew on that for a while...PS

Why would anyone knowingly give money to people who make illegal inferior bootlegs instead of buying the real thing?

I don't care either way. Until this thread (I didn't read your other one) I never even knew anyone cared.

I only buy the real statues because the manufacture and finish is better.

If you find a 'copy' that is just as good...or you can live with the substandard difference for whatever reason (cost, availability) then, sure, go for it.

IMHO as long as it's not being sold as an original and cannot be sold as the original I'm fine with it. I only buy the real deal myself but if if I had a grail piece I couldn't afford or find & the quality is there in the recast I'd probably look at a cast as an option

I like original sculpts garage kits, for example I had my eye on a superb Masamune Shirow piece for years but when I have the money it is gone. But I don't really like recasts, not matter if they are recasts of an official licensed piece or a fan made one. And the line is very thin and unclear regarding this matter in the Star Wars Stormtrooper helmets domain...
