Its a goner. Eventually if you test it enough like that it'll overheat and be totally kaput.
Once I had one that did that. I was a fool and washed wet paint down the drain without thinking.
That did it in.

Sounds like its a goner. They are fairly easy to replace yourself. I did one right around Christmas when ours went kaput.

If your renting I would assume its a landlord issue. Just like any appliance that is part of the apartment / home.

sounds like a loose wire..............kill the breaker and check the connections on the disposal & your wall switch.

by the way when I rented my lease said I was responsible for the garbage disposal.
I Bought the second cheapest one at home depot, replaced it and all was good.... moved out a few years later....
I've never done one before but I'm pretty handy having used to be a motorcycle mechanic...
Also it came with a wrench so that if it gets stuck you can put the wrench on the bottom and turn it manually.
maybe yours got stuck and needed help...

I actually found a brand new garbage disposal, still in the box, in the middle of the road. I stopped to pick it up because it looked a little like it might be a Sideshow or Hot Toys figure.
Then a fellow Freak ended up needing one and I sent it to them.
spiderrogue - I am betting you had a jam that did not clear perfectly with the wrench. And it may have worked free the rest of the way over the course of time with the turning on of the unit. I just had a similar incident with mine. I tried unjamming it with the wrench. It would turn with the wrench...but not by the switch. I removed it and thoroughly cleared the jam and it was fine.

funny thing...my wife and mom in law were watching some show the other day..not sure what it was..good morning america or something like that...on that show...there was a guy who had some tips on keeping the appliances in your house good and nice working order....so bear with me...
one of the tips was to put ice in the disposal, cuz sometimes having that really cold stuff can make it run better, etc..clean it out, etc...ok....
so, without my mother in law knowing that our disposal was broken, was sharing this with my wife and talking about the show, etc. my wife proceeds to tell her that the other day, i emptied the ice maker and let the ice melt and run down the sink(on the disposal side, ironically)....and that was about a day or two before i tried the switch(and it had worked)....so with that being said...was it coincidence that it started to work? or did putting the ice in the sink, make it work? either way...pretty freaky that was a tip on that show..and then ours started working(without us knowing about the ice trick)...a couple of days after i put ice in the sink...weird huh?

Mine did the exact same thing a few months ago. Stopped working. I left it unplugged for 3 or 4 days. After it while it decided to work again. I figured either the wife or one of the kids over heated the motor or some such and pissed it off.
