We all fear the dreaded "chinese sweat shop paint apps." The question is, would you pay extra to have a premium paint job done by artists commissioned by Sideshow? If so, how much are you willing to spend?

It wouldn't necessarily be a new edition or anything, it would a checkbox you click when you order a piece. A purchased service, if you will.

Please take a second to explain your vote. ie: "Dumb idea." or "I'd rather send my figures to artists I know."

Just get it done by Les or Josh or Mickey. They are as good as anyone SS is gonna get, and probably cheaper too.

its not a dumb idea, but i say no because most items are expensive enough as it is. and for the premium we are already paying we shouldn't have to worry about our item being painted by someone having a bad day. SS just needs to have better quality control.

No. As Sideshow's 1/6 figure prices become ever closer to the likes of Hot Toys then the quality of things like production paint should be significantly improved and on a consistent basis as opposed to once in a blue moon.
Seeing as Sideshow are so cosy with Hot Toys they should have a chat with their painting supervisor JC Hong as very few of their production figures ship with crappy paintjobs.

i hate the fact that I have to, but i would in a heart beat if the paint apps are subpar.

it IS annoying that often times a figure is marketed, and pre-sold based on prototype pics, which don't look anything like final production pieces.

Agreed!

Before the Star Wars line SSC had a very good track record of closely matching their prototype paint apps. in production. You'd get the occasional dud like Ash or Willow, but for the most part what you saw was what you got. I don't know what happened after they started with the Star Wars line that turned the process into a game of Russian roulette.

I agree! The price we pay should already include a good paint job! And imagine the secondary market; you might never know if you were getting the "premium" paint job or normal. Just opens up too many cans of worms!

Here is what I think, personally...

I think that the prototype should be painted to the best of the painter's ability and the factory should do their best to give a decent representation of that original work. Hot Toys does this exceptionally well. Their Prototypes are amazing, and the figure comes out pretty damn close to that proto.

The problem is the factory. The proto painters cannot be blamed, they paint as they are told to.. The factory just needs an upgrade, either a better supervisor or something. Their skin tones aren't bad, it's just that they tend to be sloppy with everything else.

Being a customizer, I can fix things myself.. But I think that those who don't have the ability shouldn't have to pay me more on top of the cost to get the figure they wanted from the start. If they want something extraordinary, they can come to myself or any of the other amazing painters here.. But just to have something that is ok and up to their standards, they shouldn't have to resort to my services or another's to get something relatively close to the proto.

I think that if the cost were to increase because they were improving paint across the board, I would be on board for taking that cost on top of what we already pay. I just don't think it would work as an add on, would be too hard to keep up with on their end.

Besides, everyone would want it anyway....

Right now, I am fairly happy with most SSC paint jobs. My fear if SSC offered a premium would be that the quality of the normal one would gradually go down.

The result of that would be the premium edition would thus have lower standards to compare to its normal to the point that eventually those paying for premiums are actually paying for what should have been the norm all along.

The perfect setup is for SSC to do the best they can and if a third party can do it better let them.

Now that SSC is at least testing the HT style of production paint (as on the hobbits) I think it will become less of an issue. I can't imagine that James Dean, the Prison Break guys or the hobbits could be subtantially improved with a more expensive paint job.

I agree as well, will be very interesting to see where the future takes us in this...
