Can anyone shed some light on any technical advancements that were made for the PS3 Slim in order to help alleviate the "dead laser" issue that so many older model PS3 owners have experienced (if any)?

My laser recently died, and if the Slim has fixed the issue, I would much rather spring for the new model instead of battling with my current :slap

Thanks in advance! :hi5:

I don't know, but I am in the same boat as you. I've only had my fat PS3 for 2 years or so and the bluray laser is not reading blurays. I feel cheated. Don't know whether to get it fixed or try to find a used slim off of craigslist or something. Really pissed off about it.

I only have my own experience to go by, but I was going through fats left and right due to blu ray laser issues as well as bluetooth module issues. I bought a slim on day 1 and it hasn't failed yet. *crosses fingers*

Yeah, I hear you. Mine just stopped reading any and all disks in the middle of playing LA Noire last night.

Hopefully this thread can provide some useful information to those who might want to upgrade to a Slim.

Good to know! I'm hoping someone out there has some technical knowledge of the Slim's hardware and might be able to provide some concrete spec improvements.

My older model is working fine, the only thing is the fan gets really load right away after putting in a disc. Do you guys think buying the external cooling fan thing will help that ordoes it need to be opened and cleaned? what do you think?

My FAT 40gb is working fine. Then again I don't spend 12 hours a day playing it.

Neither do I, I play maybe 4 hours a week :dunno

So I decided to pick up a Slim model :slap

Is there anything to be done with my old fatty? Anything to salvage? Anywhere that refurbishes them offering some sort of credit?

I'll bet you can sell it on eBay to somebody who knows how to replace the drive. Just give full disclosure in your description.

My old ps2 used to have problems with the lasers and what the repairman told me was that the lens has to switch positions every time you change from DVD to ps2 disk (something like that). And overtime, this switching will cause the lens to wear down much faster.

So with the ps3, i have only played a blu ray once in all these years. And so far no lens problem....BUT got overheating problem; the fat ps3 died a few months ago...bought a slim to replace it.
