According to Entertainment Weekly, producer Peter Block (the Saw franchise, John Carpenter’s The Ward) has purchased the remake rights to Stan Winston’s 1988 cult horror film Pumpkinhead. Nate Atkins (S. Darko, Deadly Descent: The Abominable Snowman) will provide the screenplay for the Pumpkinhead remake, which is scheduled to begin shooting early next year and is currently going out to potential directors.

“[We need] somebody who really understands why the first one is terrific, the emotional beats of ‘Is the revenge you seek worse than whatever befell you in the first place?’” said Block of his ideal director. “But it’s also somebody that wants to embrace what I think audiences really want these days — a really scary, fun thrill-ride. You get a lot of people who want to be in this genre because they see the commercial opportunities. I’m looking for a director who has a love for the genre and knows how to get those beats for the audience.”

The directorial debut of practical effects man Winston (Aliens, Jurassic Park) starred Lance Henriksen and was followed by 1994’s DTV sequel Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, as well as two Syfy movies, Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes and Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud. Block, who insists practical effects will play a big part in the production, gave a few clues as far as what to expect from the redo, which will be titled simply “Pumpkinhead.”

“There is a similarity of theme and a similarity of story. There’s a lot of Easter eggs for people who know the original — iconic shots and iconic lines that we’re going to use. But we’ve enhanced the setting, and we’ve expanded the characters somewhat, to give it a different kind of experience.”

I always enjoyed the original dumb movies. Watched them every Halloween. Look forward to this regardless!

I'm in.

I've only seen the first one, which I remember to be good? But apparently the sequels are as bad as the Hellraiser sequels?

So I'm in for a reboot.

I really hope they use a little care in producing this. I loved the original due to it's nostalgia around Halloween. The puppet was just awesome. Gave me nightmares. I'm excited. I imagine they may line up a couple of films out of this. Just hope CGI isn't terrible. Practical effects should be used as well.

Loved the original movie, I too watch it usually around halloween, but I won't be seeing the remake. This is a prime example that I feel that if I want to see a particular movie, regardless of when it was made, I'll just watch THAT version. I don't care how better the effects COULD be now that a movie (any movie for that matter) can be remade NOW with better tech than when it was originally done. What's next, a 2001: A Space Odyssey reboot/remake? Casablanca? Even when directors/producers try their best to be tipping the hat to the former film, just look at the supposed 'shot for shot' remake of Psycho.....it was terrible.....

I'll still watch it. It won't be the original but it will still hopefully have the same tone and ridiculousness.

I don't know if the original is a classic... Cult classic maybe.

But I seem to remember it wasn't perfect, so this could benefit from a reboot just like Hellraiser, which is also no a classic, can benefit from the new one.

I never thought about Pumpkinhead as a Ghostbusters or a Robocop in terms of quality.

But, it's been ages since I watched it, I could be wrong.

It's really a stupid story and concept but I love the nostalgia it has for Halloween. And I loved the monster too. Was just a good monster story for me I guess.

Here's hoping for a cameo from my boy Lance H. [emoji106]

I hope they dont change the way the creature looks.

Or at least the changes are very minimal

yea, I'm wondering what they will do with the creature look wise. I'm thinking they will change the look drastically, so not to copy the Winston model. I hope Legacy effects does the monster. The original is definitely not much of a classic as the acting and story telling is very simple and not all that great. The monster is what made that film watchable.
