The rumours have been buzzing like hornets for ages, spurred along by Quentin Tarantino dropping hints for years about wanting to pump out his own version of the classic Spaghetti Westerns. Despite earlier title and casting reports, the official word has now come down thanks to the front page of the script emerging on Twitter – QT’s next project will be called Django Unchained.

There are no real plot details floating around just yet (despite the fact that the script seems to be in the hands of people who could easily spill such things), but given the title, it’ll most likely riff on Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 Spaghetti Western Django, which saw Franco Nero as a Gatling gun-slinger who goes through seven shades of hell.

Nero has been linked to Tarantino’s Western project ever since he talked up the idea, so it’s probable that he’s going to be returning to the role. Unlike some of QT’s other actor obsessions, Nero has been working steadily, and continues to crop up in movies including The Rite and lending his voice to this year’s Cars 2. He also mentioned Inglourious Basterds’ Christoph Waltz being up for a part, and while that has yet to be officially confirmed, it’s a good bet given how well Waltz and Tarantino worked together.

So now we have something to truly look forward to. The plan, apparently, is to kick off shooting in the autumn, which means we could have a Tarantino Western in cinemas next year…

Sounds pretty good to me...whatever it is :lol

Plus more Christoph Waltz can only be a good thing.

YES!!!!

Tarantino is an unbelievable writer, and I'll eagerly anticipate this.

I was just reading about this on a Dutch filmnews site! :rock

This is what Tarantino said about this project a while back:

"I'd like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let's shine that light on ourselves. You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it 'A Southern.'"

They also posted this:

"The title character Django is a freed slave, who under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) becomes a badass bounty hunter himself and after assisting Waltz on taking down some bad guys for profit, is in turn assisted by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner. And that doesn't even half begin to cover it! This film deals with racism as I've rarely seen it handled in a Hollywood film. While it's 100 percent pure popcorn and revenge flick, it is pure genius in the way it takes on the evil slave owning south. Think of what he did with the Nazis in Inglourious and you'll get a sense of what he's doing with slave owners and slave overseers in this one. It's violent and funny and full of great Tarantino monologues and shoot outs (and slave rapes and slave tortures) and the center piece of the script is this fantastic relationship between Django and his Obi-Wan Waltz and it all just _____ing works in the way only Tarantino makes it work."

Nothing officially confirmed, but this text was posted by someone who read the script apparently... :dunno

So, don't know if this is true, but it sounds pretty awesome! :rock :rock :rock

Sounds great, this is basically what Quentin has been preparing for with every movie he's made, their all love letters to the spaghetti western genre.

Well he didn't use it until Kill Bill and since didn't use it for Sin City or Death Proof. But it certainly seems like a no brainer for this movie.

My only hope is that this doesn't mirror Inglorious Basterds revenge plot too much.

He only directed one scene in Sin City (the scene in the car with Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro), but I hear what you are saying.

He did use Morricone in Death Proof and also in Inglourious Basterds.

According to the latest information, on April 26 Quentin Tarantino finished the script and handed in the final draft to the Weinstein Company. The film, starring Christoph Waltz, “It's a western whose lead character is a former slave who is in league with Waltz to save his wife from an evil plantation owner" said the director's agency. The movie is said to be inspired by the 1966 movie Django, directed by Sergio Corbucci, but also the 2007 Japanese remake by director Takashi Miike, called Sukiyaki Western Django, which featured Tarantino in a cameo as a character named Ringo.

I thought Sukiyaki Western Django sucked.

I thought it would have been 1000x times if it were done in Japanese. Cinematography was outstanding, story was essentially a remake of Yojimbo (so while not original, entertaining), but the acting left so much to be desired because of the strong accents.

Will Smith to play Django?

Some might argue that one trip to the wild, wild West was enough for Will Smith. Quentin Tarantino is, it seems, not one of those people. According to a report which you should take with a generous heaping of salt, QT wants Smith for the lead in Django Unchained, his buzzed-about next film which may co-star Christoph Waltz and Sam Jackson. Cue the Stevie Wonder riff!

Again, to reiterate, nothing has been confirmed. No offer has officially gone out. Tarantino just finished scrawling the script the other day, guys! So what we’re looking at is a very preliminary wish list of people that QT and Co. hope to line up as they seek studio partners for international release (Weinstein Co. has domestic rights).

But let’s just indulge the suggestion for the moment. THR reports that Smith would play Django, “a freed slave who seeks to reunite with his slave wife, a journey which will see him team up with a German bounty hunter to take down an evil plantation owner.” Said German would hypothetically be played by Inglourious Basterd Waltz, with Jackson being eyed to play the manipulative slave working for one Monsieur Calvin Candie, the film’s big baddie. (Variety reports that Waltz is indeed attached to play a character named Dr. King Schultz, and that Tarantino wrote the role of Django with Smith in mind.) The film may begin shooting this fall in the South.

This fantasy casting seems to make sense both ways, as Smith could use a creative shake-up and go where he really hasn’t gone before, into the Tarantino universe. As one of the world’s most reliable box office draws, he doesn’t necessarily need this kind of film - it needs him and his star power more. But it would be fun to see what might happen if Tarantino joins forces with the erstwhile Fresh Prince. Two great tastes that taste great together?
