last year I was given a car, the title was signed over to me. I have not yet put the title in my name though as I never had the money to fix the car. I'm wondering if anyone here knows if I waited to long? I wont be able to get an affidavit or anything like that as we don't speak anymore. Does anyone have any advice for me? I'll be calling tomorrow to get it sorted but thought someone might be able to give me an idea of what I'm looking at.

If you have any piece of paper that shows you bought the car (with a signature). You SHOULD be OK. If not...simply explain to the former owner that they need to sign the affidavit, or they will be responsible for all of the back registration with penalties.

Thanks Darth. Just got off the phone and they said as long as the back of the title has the sale price written on it, etc, we're all good. So everything is ok. Thankfully.

Yeah, that and some record (or bill of sale) should be all you need. You have the physical title itself so you're 90% of the way there, at least.

They said the bill of sale is when the person signing over the title puts the price on the back of the title. So that's all I needed.

Speaking of which, now that everything is straight, just out of curiosity did you have to pay any registration and/or penalties BuffyGirl?

Ah...that explains some.

I actually have a'95 ford escort wagon that has not been registered for like 4 years. When I go to get it done, if the guy I sold it to and then got back from doesn't sign off on it, I'll be glad to give the DMV his address so they can recoup the back registration and penalties from him.
