i've heard mention of some of the artists here using a paint sealer on their figs as well as a gloss coat on some figs as to make: for example blood shinier and more realistic looking. my question is are they one in the same? im assuming that not everything you paint you want shiny and but some things you might. so a clear coat whether its shiny or more of a matte finish is a paint sealer........correct? good grief i feel my noobness.......:lol.

Not that I'm a great customizer or painter but, you pros correct me if I'm wrong, both a matte clear coat and a gloss clear coat act as "sealers" or protect the paint.

I use both Testors Dull Cote and Delta Ceramcoat Gloss Varnish on my figure repaints as well as Acrylic Krylon Matte or Gloss on my custom display shelves to not only protect the paint but even out the sheen of the paint.

ok very quickly (sorry too much on my desk for a long answer lol) when I've painted a head I spray it with a gloss or satin varnish, this give it a hard finish. Then I spray over that with Testors dullcote, this makes it completely matt... then I use gloss varnish from a small glass jar, like hobby paint, and with a tiny brush gloss the eyes and very gently the middle of the lips, right between then. Not much though. Then I drop on beads of gloss into the centre of the eyes to create the 'lens'

I go back and forth on this, but I haven't been using any kind of sealant on most of my figures. I've had some experiences in the past where it changes the look of the figure (and in some cases if things go really wrong, it can totally wreck a paint job, which is ironic since you're trying to pretend the paint). I figure since I almost never touch the head and they're just for my own use, I can get by without it. But when I did use it, I would use something like Testors Dullcote.

I use Citadel 'Ard Coat for things like lips, eyes, and wounds. It comes in a jar like paint and you can just brush it on. It really brings the figures to life when I add that at the end, IMHO.

^ So did you do the entire head with Testors Dullcote and then put the Citadel 'Ard Coat over that or just the parts that you weren't going to cover with Citadel 'Ard Coat?

That's it exactly. Do this! :rock

Just to clarify, the Dullcote is a spray that you would spray the entire head with, and the 'Ard Coat is a very thick and glossy liquid, so it's just appropriate for things like eyes that you want to look wet. You'd put that on after doing the Dullcote, or it will end up dulling the parts you want shiny.

Is this process worth doing to a SSC head? Is there a benefit to doing just this process to a production head?

okay another question. im assuming this is a spray can and if so then its applied lightly & maybe just one coat or several?
