Is this really Ridge Racer? With its new mantra of 'drive, destroy, dominate', Ridge Racer: Unbounded sounds like it'll be a far cry from the blue skies, palm trees and pristine beaches of Ridge Racers gone by. Adding an unexpected twist to the established Ridge template, you'll be encouraged to break the rules of the road and smash your rivals off the track.

“Ridge Racer Unbounded is a fresh take on one of the most important racing franchises in video game history,” said Olivier Comte, VP Marketing, Sales & Publishing at Namco Bandai Europe. “As such, we're treating it with the reverence it deserves, and with the talented Bugbear team at the helm we're confident of delivering a game fans new and existing will get a big destructive kick out of.”

On development duties is Helsinki-based Bugbear Entertainment whose previous games include the FlatOut series and SEGA Rally Revo, so the studio has a decent racing pedigree. How Bugbear will manage to preserve the spirit of the series with its new focus on extreme crashes and destruction remains to be seen, but we'll have to wait until 2012 when Ridge Racer: Unbounded releases to find out. So now instead of being it's own thing, it's now like every other racer...Burnout, Split Second, Blur...nothing says we have run out of ideas like emulating the competition.

I haven't really enjoyed a Ridge Racer game since Rage Racer (though I liked the atmosphere of Ridge Racer: Type 4).
